Question about 1994 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

We slid the cup holder in without realizing that a credit card which we had laid in the compartment above had apparently slid onto the cup holder. It was shoved into the space and causes the cup holder to stick shut, plus we cannot get to the area where the card is. Therefore, we need to remove the cup holder to get at the credit card. How do we do this without ruining the cup holder? And also not ruin the spring mechanism that controls the cup holder locking into place.

The procedure is as follows:-- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent an accidental short circuit. Unclip the radio trim bezel (upper dash). Remove (4) Phillips screws from the factory head unit, slide the unit out and disconnect the wiring. Remove the ashtray and unclip the trim bezel (lower dash). Remove (4) Phillips screws from the factory pocket/cupholder assembly and remove the assembly. Locate the faceplate supplied with the aftermarket head unit. Place the faceplate into the recessed opening in the Radio Housing. If the faceplate fits easily into the opening with no interference, leave the Housing intact. If the faceplate does NOT fit easily into the opening, trim away the ribs located on the top and bottom of the opening ("A"). Locate the v-cut along the top lip of the Radio Housing. Using the v-cut as a guide, cut and remove the top portion of the Housing . Remove the cupholder from the factory head unit assembly. Slide the cupholder into the bottom of the Radio Housing until the locating pins engage the slots in the kit. (Once the locating pins are engaged, maneuver the cupholder until it is flush with the face of the Housing). Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Being a novice at a repair such as this, some of the terminology is not clear. Is there a drawing available showing these parts, such as the radio trim bezel? Am I understanding correctly that the radio must be removed, along with the part of the housing that holds it in the dash? What is an aftermarket head unit? When you say, "unclip the radio trip bezel", do you pry it out with a screwdriver?

I haven't attempted anything yet, until I receive a clarification and hopefully a drawing.

    Thank you.

After receiving your reply, we requested a drawing identifying the parts being referred to in your solution, but have not received a reply. Are you unable to provide this?

Replacing cup holder

I assume you mean the one that flips up in the center console?

If so, there are three likely issues.

1) did you slide out the retainer from the upper screw? the top screw had a cover that had to be pried off. you then took the screw out. Lastly you have to slide out the plastic retainer that the screw went into. It slides out towards the opening.

2) you have to have the cup holder partially open to remove it. the hinged part that folds up is stored in the cavity under the console when closed. you have to open the cup holder and keep pushing until the front of the cup holder lip comes up. Work the cup holder up and down until it comes out.

3) the cup holder is stuck in place due to years of spilled liquid. If you've done the above, then you can either spray soapy water on the creases around the opening and let it set, or you can apply strategic brute force.
Be aware through. if this is the center console cup holder just behind the gear shifter. There are two screws and nothing else to hold it in. Just be carefull....

I need to get under the cup holder section of the console

I hate to be the berrer of bad news but unless you can sneek a grab at it from the side you will need to remove the whole console. I would try some of those 4 jaw flexible pincher grabbers most parts stores would cary them.

I have a 2003 Pontiac Montana. I am changing the radio out. Got 4 of the 6 screws out but not sure on how to remove cup holder in the dash to get to 2 other screws? Help!!!

Pull the cup holder out, then push it in about 2 inches, then push it DOWN at a 45 degree angle, pull on it and it will come out, then you can get the two screws above the cup holder out.
