Question about 1989 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer

My 89 s10 will not start for days on end no matter what i do. then out of no where it will fire right up. any suggestions? fuel relay is new and so is fuel pump.

    I would suggest you keep a log for about 2 cycles of starting and not starting. There could be a wire loose and grounding out on the block or wet electrical system if it does not start in wet conditions or a heat wave where the gas has "vapor locked " The system. I've had a similar problem in my Blazer, and I had a simpler solution. If it doesn't feel like there's the normal amount of resistance when you turn the key, it could just be the linkage between the ignition switch and the part under the dash that actually controls ignition is out of whack. Look inside the left-hand side of the steering column underneath the ring that the automatic shifter sticks out of. See that there're 2 little metal rods there, one of which has a little block attached to it? The one without the block is your headlight dimmer. The one with the block is your ignition linkage. Stick a flathead screwdriver in there, underneath the block, and then gently pry it towards you while turning the key.

There is the possibility that the ignition coil is faulty and first check to see if full battery voltage is getting to the "Pos" (+) positive side of the ignition coil when the key is in the "Run" position, and also that full battery voltage is getting through the "Pos" (+) or positive side of the ignition coil and over to the distributor ignition module, dis-connect the wire connector from the ignition module and if battery voltage is not present at the connector to the ignition module with the key in the "Run" position but it is present at the "Pos" side of the ignition coil, then the ignition coil is faulty. If battery voltage is present then check the ohms between the high tension terminal (where the coil wire goes on the ignition coil) and the "Pos" terminal on the ignition coil by first dis-connecting the wires from the ignition coil and then test with the "Neg" lead from the ohm meter in the high tension terminal on the ignition coil, and the "Pos" lead from the ohm meter to the the "Pos" terminal on the ignition coil, and the ohm reading should be between 6,000 and 30,000 ohms and if not replace the ignition coil. A faulty ignition coil can also damage the ignition module.

The ignition module and the pick-up coil/stator located inside of the distributor is what generates the signal that the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, as well as the signal to run the fuel pump and the dwell signal timing to fire the ignition coil. A faulty ignition module can cause any one of these systems to malfunction.

That does sound like a malfunction with the ignition module inside of the distributor, and you can remove the ignition module and have it tested for free at most auto part stores. If the ignition module does test out alright then the problem could still be in the pick-up coil/stator, (it can be tested using an ohm meter by dis-connecting the wire connector from the pick-up coil/stator and the ohm reading between the two wires from the pick-up coil/stator should be between 500 and 1500 ohm's, and both of the wires from the pick-up coil/stator should show an open loop or an infinite reading between each wire and ground) and if the pick-up coil/stator is found to be faulty then replace the entire distributor, or the distributor will have to be dis-assembled to install a new pick-up coil/stator.

If you do purchase a new ignition module be sure that it does come with a silicone grease or a die-electric compound because it is a heat sink and the ignition module will burn up without it.

To install the new ignition module first clean out the mounting surface inside of the distributor. Then completely coat the metal contact surface under the ignition module with a thick coat the silicone grease or die-electric compound and do not leave any of the metal contact surface of the ignition module un-coated with the silicone grease or die-electric compound, and be very careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it will be damaged.

Did you check the fuel pump relay ? The relay gets power from a fuse and also from the PCM relay. The computer grounds the relay to turn it on for 3 seconds when you turn the key on, then only after the computer "sees" RPM or oil pressure.

I'm not sure if your engine has hydraulic lifters or not. sorry, but if it does, then pumping them up might take a few cranks to build up oil pressure. I would check compression, cylinder leakage, to start. The more information you can get on the engine, the better. If the mixture is too rich BEFORE start up, it might take a few cranks to get fresh air charge into the intake header before right mixture is present for fireup.

Where would i find the fuel relay switch on 94 s10 blazer


the fuel relay is on the fire wall, drivers side, upper corner.facing the truck its on the upper right side there are two 1 and 1/2 inch by 1 inch black plastic relays with connections attatching at the bottom you want the one on the right,that is the fuel relay.

My 89' S10 will turn over but not crank?


I would check and see if this is your fuel pump. Spray starting fluid in the throttle body right underneath the air horn and if its starts it's your fuel pump. Try turning your key three times but do not start it the first two times and your third time let it cycle for a second then turn the key to start. If it starts during one of these tests it's your fuel pump. Of course check battery and cables, plugs and wires, fuel in the tank, and starter. Autozone offers free tests on your electrical system. '99 chevy caviler fires right up, but then dies after started, like out of gas. Fuel relay sensor? fuel filter? fuel pump?


If it is fuel injected it will get enough fuel to start but not stay running. I had the same problem with my S10. Turns out the hose that went on to the end of the fuel pump was roted. pull the sending unit and check the hose connections to the pump and the sending unit. If problem presists replace filter first the pump.

My 1996 s10 blazer wont start it has new fuel pump and has spark. I changed the spider but still wont start


Like Kristisamp Said check the Fuel pump relays, they are little black box shaped fuses in the glove box, there are 3 of them, I think there may be a cover over them so you can see it......
Take the cover off and there you go......
I have a 96 blazer 2 door that had the same problem, I repalced thes relays and Bam!!! fired right up........

Are you sure its no spark? It could also be a bad fuel pump... have you done a check for spark? If you pull one of the plugs out and lay it on the engine block and turn the car over a few times you don't see spark, or it just doesn't fire when it cranks?

I suggest you perform this test. If you see spark I can almost guarnatee that its a fuel pump issue.

Try this test if the one above passes. Pull off the intake hose (big thick hose attached to the throttle body) and spray in some starting fluid. If it cranks and tries to run but then dies, that suggests that there is no fuel getting to the motor which is usually a bad fuel pump as relays and fuses usually don't burn out on their own. These two tests should narrow it down pretty significantly. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
