Question about 1989 Ford Ranger

Yes i just replaced the engine in my 1989 ranger its a 2.9 v/6 and i was wondering where the rotor should be pointing in the distributer?on top dead center should the rotor be towards the number 1 plug or does itpoint to nomber one on cap?

How to reset timing on 1992 454 tbi after replacing distributer


You have to put the number 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke, and then you install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower that is on the distributor cap.

Pull the spark plug from number 1 cylinder. You need a helper to turn the engine over by hand (using a socket on the crank pulley), or he can bump the starter over in very short bursts. Put your finger over the spark plug hole. When the piston is rising on the compression stroke, you will feel air pressure on your finger. Now look at the crank pulley and turn the engine on over until the zero degrees mark lines up on the timing pointer. Or you can stick a long straw or similar into the spark plug hole (don't let it drop into the cylinder!) to feel when the piston is at top of travel...see, you feel for pressure build up with finger (piston is rising on compression stroke), when you feel it, turn engine on over by hand until the piston is at top of travel-that is TDC of compression stroke. Now install distributor so that rotor ends up pointing directly to number 1 spark plug wire tower. Then follow firing order -as the rotor turns, it will follow the firing order around the dist. cap.
There are two top dead centers of each piston, tdc of compression stroke and tdc of exhaust stroke- to time the engine, you need tdc of compression-that is when the spark plug fires in the cylinder, so that is when you want the distributor in with the rotor pointing to #1.

The distributor does have to be removed and dis-assembled in order to replace the ignition pick-up coil/stator, and if the pick-up coil/stator is faulty then the distributor should be replaced because the distributor will come with a new pick-up coil/stator and the old distributor will have to be removed anyway and in the long run it will actually save money from not having to pay a mechanic to remove and dis-assemble the distributor to replace the pick-up coil/stator, however most of the time it is the ignition module inside of the distributor that is faulty.




When the engine is at TDC (Top Dead Center) is the ignition rotor pointing to the #1 position on the distributor housing as described below?



The engine should be set on TDC (Top Dead Center) with the distributor cap removed, and there is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. (Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing)

This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.



If the engine is at TDC and the ignition rotor does not point to the #1 mark on the distributor housing, then loosen the hold down bolt to the distributor and turn the distributor until the rotor is pointing to the #1 mark on the distributor and then tighten the distributor hold down bolt.

timing is way to slow. are points gap set properly. I think they are set at .016 for used points.
Fireing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4
with timing mark set at top dead center .i think it is a ball on back of engine. distributer rotor should be at #! .

when the engine is a top dead center on cyl one put the distributor in so the rotor points to the no1 spark plug wire trminal on the cap try that let me know if it helps

I am asuming this means I have tdc on exhaust stroke now and need to pull dist again and spin roter shaft 180 degrees?


the best way to set the distributer, is to have engine at top dead center. then replace distributer with rotor button pointing to #1 plug wire on cap. have a good day!!

Just replaced engine in my 97 its a vortec brought it to tdc put in distributar it turns over and tries to start but wont i turn it just a little it acts better but i cant move it far enough


take the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder and turn the engine by hand until the piston is at the top dead center of its stroke (put a screw driver in the hole and you should be able to tell when its all the way up). now pull the cap off the distributer the rotor should be pointing at the #1 cylinder wire. if not then the distributer is in the wrong possition. remove the distributer and point the rotor in the correct possition(#1 cylinder) and place the distributer back in.also if this is a used engine replace the cap,rotor plugs and wires.the truck should start. Hope this helps you out.

You need to turn the engine over to find Top dead center,
Then remove the cap and see if the rotor is pointing to #1,Then verify the wires have started in that position and are rotating in the right direction.

Viewed from above, front of vehicle at the bottom, cylinder locations are:
8 7
6 5
4 3
2 1

The distributor rotation is clockwise.

To find Top dead center (for wire to cylinder #1 on distributor), look for and line up the timing marks on the crankshaft (front of the engine).

Or, pull the #1 spark plug, stuff the hole with a cork or a rag. Slowly crank the engine until the cork pops out. Pull the distributor off. The rotor is pointing where the plug for cylinder #1 should go. The rest of the wires go in the firing order clockwise.

Firing order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

That about covers it.
