Question about 1997 Chevrolet Blazer

I've got a '97 4.3 l. It ran great. Left the drive and died. It hasn't started since. I have good spark, 59lbs of preasure at the schrader valve on the fuel line. 110 to 122lbs of compression. It cranks like it has a hard spot (kind of like the timing is advanced too much) or super high compression. Been down the ignition switch road, all of the fuses are hot when and where they should. I have verified that the dist. is in the correct tooth on the compression stroke. It has new dist., plugs, cap, rotor, wires CAM and Crank sensors (from an earlier failure about 500 miles ago). The spark was intermitant and ended up throwing a code, so after looking at the coil this round, I noticed it was swollen and chared, so I put a new coil on. Good clean spark now. I have had a couple pretty good techs over to look at it, and they have left scratching thier heads, and try to avoid answering my calls now! Anything strike you as being familiar? I know this is a tough way to trouble shoot, but I'm grasping at straws. Thanks Rob from Indiana

Does it have a throttle body system or the spyder injection system? if regular throttle body dump some gas into the throttle body and see if it runs that way. if it runs it may be you have a bad computer grounding issue. check all wires grounded to the body for good connection. it could be a bad timing chain. Mabey it jumped a tooth or 2. burnt valves could also be a problem. cranking as if it has a hard spot could mean the firing order is off or it has jumped time, the possibilities are many, but hope this helps. good luck.

Engine ran roughly then after shutdown wont start. I suspect fuel pump. filter good. And where is pump located?


How long since a tune-up? Check applicable trouble codes? What led you to the fuel pump as being your problem?
Usually if it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it, while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure and fuel injector pulse.
Only crank the starter motor for a few seconds at a time, let it cool off, a little.
I do realize, sometimes visually checking for spark, can be a pain. Also, checking fuel pressure can be a pain if no Schrader valve, but, not impossible.
I'm not saying the pump can't be your problem, it could be, just check the other issues, also. The fuel pump is in the gas tank.

Have a 99 Buick lesabre it was leaking from oil sending.unit I replaced it and started it, it ran for 20 mins and died and won't re start? Any ideas..I read that maybe something kicked off fuel pump


Did you disconnect/remove any other wiring/sensor when changing the pressure switch? Try disconnecting the plug from the switch and retry starting. The oil pressure switch on some GM products worked as a backup for power supply to the fuel pump in case of relay failure but I don't think this model uses that system. It could just be coiencindental that this happened. You need to determine if there is no fuel supply or spark causing the no start. Remove a spark plug wire and hold it over a ground and crank the engine. If spark is there it is a fuel problem most likely. Remove cap on schrader valve on fuel rail and press valve to determine fuel pressure/supply. If one aspect is not there, you will have to diagnose further

I have a 98 explorer and had a similar problem. It wound up being bad spark plug wires. So I changed them and the spark plugs while I was at it. It ran great and still does. I'm not sure if that's your problem I would need more information.

My guess would be two of the plug wires are on the wrong plugs.
The original problem could be a faulty fuel pump relay or the check valve in the fuel pump.

you must make sure the fuel is getting to motor, check the fuel preasure after it dies check preasure or try spraying starting fluid in throtlebody to see if it a fuel problem, if it doesnt start then check for spark at the plugs,the most common problems are fuelpumps or control modules going bad,

fuel pump might of gone bad, yes it can happen that fast , anyway start by checking for feul preasure and spark, start there ,good luck.

check the fuel preasure , also will it restart after it dies, if you have spark and fuel it should run, maybe not enough fuel preasure? thats only if it wont restart, good luck.

That is probably because of a too rich mixture on start. I don't think that cylinders are flooded overnight, that would be unusual.
To ensure you can remove spark plugs overnight, and put them back on start in the morning. If the problem is righ mixture, then the problem will restart as usually. If problem was flooding because of a leak (valve, butterfly), then after drying up the engine will start immediately.

Rich mixture can be caused by incorrect MAF or AIT sensors causing wrong choke settings, by wrong spark plugs cable order, distribution problems, valve problems, choke butterfly problem, or by a bad PCM. Sometimes scanning the car for OBD codes can tell you something on the problem

we'll assume fuel is good..leaving spark and air..and management of systems(computer /sensors)...so the speedo cable was disconnected? try taking it loose again , test drive and report back please
