Question about 2000 Subaru Legacy
Hello, I have an imported RSK B4 which is randomly having a problem with the dash lights. Every now and again on start up or even when driving the dash will go black leaving only the indicator arrows on green in a permanent state not blinking on or off. Sometimes it rectifies itself and the whole lot illuminates up, other times I wait until I next get in the car and it seems ok, I start up and all the back lights come on the dash as they should .....funny thing is, it tends to be on the warmer days...is this just odd that it happens on warm days which I find totaly odd!
Our local *** Import guys have stripped out the dash and found no apparent problem with the lighting unit. They checked all they could, re-fitted the light unit and it worked! but as above it keeps doing the same thing, randomly going off which is a nightmare in the dark!!!
I suspect a faulty earth wire or dry circuit within the light unit but I'm no expert can anyone who has had or still has a similar issue help on this?
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

SOURCE: Recently, my wife's 1998 Subaru
I had the same problem on our 1999 Forester after replacing the battery. Here was the solution I was given by Subaru Santa Cruz.
1) the key to the ON position where all the dash lights up. 2) disconnect the NEGATIVE battery terminal. 3) wait 15 seconds then reconnect the the battery. 4) start the engine from the ON position.
If this doesn't work, the car must be taken in for repair.
