The starter solenoid is mounted on top of the starter motor.

That round part.....

Follow the black cable off the battery, it is connected in the front to the solenoid. We have a 2001 sunfire so it has the short negative cable. Some sunfires have longer cables, I am not sure on those models where it is located.

Go to thepositive terminal of the battery and follow this cable there at the end is the solenoid of the starter motor.

Pontiac sunfire starter issues?

Either your solenoid is sticking or your key switch is bad. Test by disconnecting the positive line to the starter (cover the connector with electrical tape to be sure it doesn't contact the chassis), then test for voltage at the S connector on the solenoid. If there is no voltage at the S connector with the key ON (not just when it is moved to START), replace the solenoid. If there is voltage at the S connector with the just the key ON, your ignition switch has failed and needs to be replaced.

1997 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed 2.2 L engine What would cause starter to stay engaged trying to turn car over even when key is not in ignition?

The soloinoid is getting power from somewhere to enable starter to try to start vehicle. Could be a short to the starter.

My 00 pontiac sunfire wont turn over the radip is not locked and no lights stay on when key is in the on position it fires every time except once in awhile here lately its acting up more

The starter solenoid is wearing out. You can buy new contacts to repair it or you can buy another starter and get the solenoid with it. Either way, you will need to remove the starter from the vehicle.

My sunfire GT will randomly not start. I never know when it is not going to start. When it randomly doesn't start i get someone to help and give me a boost. As soon as it starts up, the car will run...

you need to get your starter checked or just replace the the starter solenoid or starter brush holder assembly.the signal light thing may be due to a high resistance in the wire ends that bolt to the starter solenoid.either way you need to check out the starter and the wireing to it.

Does the 97 98 pontiac sunfire have the same motor

Yes - they both came with a 2.2L inline 4 cylinder as the base option, and the GT had the 2.4L twin cam I4.

Hope this helps!

Sunfire gt 97 2.4L. car won't start, small

sounds like a starter solenoid went bad which it is easier to replace the whole starter assembly then just the solenoid and you can get one with a LLT Limited Life Time warranty.

02 pontiac sunfire won't crank at random times

Hi, I had the same problem with my girlfriend's 97' sunfire, it wouldn't start so I jumped the starter terminals which I think screwed it up even more (causing the theftlock light to come on). It turns out this is a common problem that can be solved by hooking up a GM Tech2 scanner, going under "body" codes, and following the instructions for bypassing the PASS LOCK SOLENOID. Hope you find this helpful, Byron
