Question about 2000 Mazda MX-5 Miata

1 Answer

Hi I have a 2000 MX5 Miata lefthand drive car. I has a problem with the CEL coming on occasionally and sometimes when you have been driving the car and start it again it runs really rough like it has very little power. It sounds a bit like a tractor and has very little power and hard to keep going feels like it is going to die on me all the time. After a while it or when you stop it again it seems to come right again until next time.

Check Engine Light is turned one when the engine control module detects a fault in the ECM system - usually in the emissions system. One or more diagnostic codes will be stored in the engine module and these codes are the information you must use use to diagnose the problem. But an not so uncommon cause for an ECM malfunction on a Miata is an old battery: clean the clamps and the battery plugs with wire wool then test the voltage with both the engine on (around 14.5v) and off (above 12v).
Yes, all the symptoms you describe are what you would expect from an engine with the CEL lit.

I have a 2000 Miata and my check engine light has come on. Ultimately, I replaced the battery and alternator. After spending $500 or so, the light has come one again and now it flashes. Any ideas?

First off, flashing is a warning NOT to drive it-unlike a steady CEL, flashing indicates there is a problem that needs immediate attention. When you had the CEL before, did you get the actual code? It might still be related, or could be an entirely different issue, although it is now more serious. If you can, you should drive it very little and straight to a commercial auto parts store to have the computer scanned for code(s)-WRITE the actual codes down, very important, so you can get help for your issue. Pay particular attention to engine temp, how it runs, check oil...do not drive it if it is running hot, has little or no oil, or is running really bad, get it towed-not worth the risk in ruining the engine.

All MX-5's are MIATA'S. the coil pack may be bad. 3000 rpms at 20mph, sounds like the trans is slipping if it was an automatic trans. it helps when you tell EVERYTHING about the car, like what trans is has, ect.

Water problems

See Mazda Service Bulletin 09-001/07 reference WATER ACCUMULATION IN FOOTWELL / PLUGGED SOFT TOP DRAINS.

Some vehicles equipped with the folding soft top may experience water accumulation in the foot wells due to
the soft top drains becoming clogged with leaves and other debris.

Mazda mx5 abs light

most likely it is just a blown bulb.. and opening up a dash on the newer vehicles is a very tedius job... so unless you have like a full week end and another source of transportation i hate to admit but i would turn it over to a pro to do..lol... i have to admit it is kinda funny.. turn your car over to a shop... to change a light bulb...most likely a #194 bulb...
