Replaced distributor in my toyota corolla 1.8 litre, its running ruff. can you adjust the timing by turning the distributor?

Yes. You very slowly turn it while the car is running, until it sounds a lot more like you are used to, smooth, that is.

WOW I just sent you the directions, ,your right on, good for you !!!you can do it your way but theres a chance you may be 180 deg out, did you bring motor to TDC before you started the work, if you did .you 'll be ok if not it wont start or run VERY badly.

High consumption of fuel


If you have serviced the engine, changed oil and oil filter and air filter and spark plugs and cleaned the carburettor or cleaned your throttle body and injectors, and its still heavy on fuel then try the following. Adjust the carburettor air and fuel. Take off the distributor cap and clean the rotor and spark pionts in the cap of carbon build up by means of light sand paper. Same applies to the spark/ high tension leads and coil lead metal connection points. Check distributor timing as well. If the engine smokes, do a compression test. If results are beneath factory specifications, remove cylinder head, replace the valve stem seals and re-seat the valves and or replace the pistons and piston rings. Basically engine overhall

1. Check resistance of the spark plug high tension cords. (approx. 6 KOhms to 25 K Ohms with DMM on the range adjusted to 10K or 20K whatever range is available on the meter).
2. Check the distributor cap and rotor (if it is distributor type ign. system, other wise CMP and CKP sensors).
3. Adjust the spark plug gap to 0.7 mm - 0.8 mm.
4. Check the valve tappet clearance. (0.25 - 0.30 mm)
5. Check the valve timing.
6. Check the MAP sensor.

Hi I'm Rishan from Sri Lanka. The fuel consumption of my Sprinter Marino AE104 (4AFE) is close to 7km per litre. Recently I have serviced the car with Engine oil Mobil 10W30 & gear box oil changed....


Please do the following:
- Check and adjust the valve clearance.
- Check the valve timing. Timing belt may have jumped a tooth or it may have wrongly be installed.
- Adjust the ignition timing with strobe light to 8 degrees before top dead center with the map sensor pipe be removed (if it is a distributor type ignition system).

How to set the timing on a 2004 toyota corolla


The ignition timing would not be adjustable.
Code 420 is for a weak catalytic converter, which can be caused by a defective cat, or a fuel problem, or the O2 sensors.
The only time ignition timing is a possible cause is when you have a distributor or something has happened to the ignition module and the timing is delayed.

check to see if u have fuel going to injectors or fire to spark plug if there is no fire coming out of distributor replace pickup coil inside distributor

HOW DO I SET DISTRIBUTOR TIMING?


Hi,

Actual timing would depend on what engine is installed in the 1985 Corolla. There are some versions that uses the 4A-GE, 4A-GEC, 4A-C engines. There are even some Asian versions that used the 4K/B engines.

The correct method would be to use timing light, engine analyzer and some other test equipment, However, below is a quick and dirty procedure. Basically, to adjust the distributor timing, you need to:
1. make sure cylinder 1's piston is at firing position/TDC (top dead center);
2. crankshaft pulley's timing mark is between the markings on the engine with numbers on them;
3. unplug the rubber boot of the high tension wire for #1 cylinder;
4. connect to it a spare known good spark plug and allow to touch any metal surface of the engine;
5. slightly loosen the single locking bolt of the distributor stem;
6. turn ignition key to ON but not start;
7. carefully swing the distributor assembly till there is spark in the exposed spark plug;
8. tighten locking bolt.

You may need to readjust the distributor for highest idling RPM with the engine running by simply turning the entire distributor assy.

The timing mark must coincide with the specified advance for whatever engine is used by the Corolla. 8 degrees would be a fair start.

Extreme care when working with engine running; extremely high voltage at the high tension wires, distributor and ignition coil and the fan/belt has been known to catch loose clothing.
