Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My car while driving completely shut off. It started up again but the light on the dash board lit up with the circle with a key in it and a slash through it. Do you know what this is and if it is very expensive?

any chance for a code ? logically it would mean that the sensor detects that the key is absent from the ignition. that would be the sensor inside the steering column who is defective

Somehow, your security key becamed unrecognized by your security system. I don't exactly know the fix for this, but maybe the dealer can tell you what to do next.

Sounds like your Sentry Key Immobiliser Module may be at fault. That's a Main Dealer Problem. Try disconnecting the battery lead for a minute or 2 then reconnect. Red.

The vehicle will start but runs only a few seconds and shuts off there is a light has a key in the circle but with a slash mark throu it and alarm system keeps going when turning the key

You don't say what year/make/model car you are using, but it sounds as though the immobilizer system is shutting the vehicle off thinking that it is seeing a counterfeit key.

Runs for about 3sec.then shuts off

There is a problem with tbe SKIS (sentry key immobilizer system). If the key symbol flashes, there is a problem with the key. Try an other key if you have one.
If the key light is on steady, then there is a malfunction of the system itself. It need to be scanned using DRBIII scanner to know what is failing.

Yellow circle slash with key picture on dash when key turned to on pos and wont start

It's most likely, looking for a security key, not a regular key. Security keys have a chip in them, to identify them as a valid key, not a screwdriver. It's a passive anti theft device. Available from the dealers.

Intermittently have to use charger to start.

the most common cause of this by far is lights left on by defective switchs, these include the map lights in the visors, the glove box light due to a defective switch, the trunk light and the hood light if equipped, check it at night and look for a faint glow, the other much less common cause is the alternator has a defective diode and allows a small current to pass to ground drawing the battery down..
