EGR valves were a common failure item for the 05 Caravans. Ours died at 42k miles.

The sensor and valve are serviced as a unit. Expect to pay $150-200 to have it done, or you can DIY or less than $100.

What causes engine to accelerate without gas?


Possibilities:
  1. Leak in intake manifold or deteriorated throttle body gasket;
  2. Loose or missing throttle body spring;
  3. Defective idle air bypass valve;
  4. Bad throttle position sensor;
  5. Bad EGR valve or EGR position sensor;
  6. Evil aliens.

cleanout egr valve and troutle body . Or replace egr with new one, clean, check vacumm lines , check for clogged check , depending on modle of car you can pippoint problem as some have a common part problem depeding with make of car. But all have to do with exaust system. Insufficient flow exaust flow. Im not an expert, all I know it is related to this, I have it myself so im googling it.

Respone to check light engine is Po401


Code 401 is for EGR flow insufficient.
There is a sensor that measures how much exhaust gas goes thru the EGR valve. The sensor could have failed, or the EGR valve may not be working. The sensor and valve would need to be tested.

P0401 OBD-II Trouble Code - Insufficient EGR Flow
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR.


Symptoms: You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms.


A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
The EGR valve is faulty
The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum


Possible Solutions: in fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.


Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
Replace the EGR valve




P0402 OBD-II Trouble Code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow (EGR) Excessive Detected
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor (DPF). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0402 code means that OBD detected an excessive amount of EGR.


Symptoms: You may notice drivability problems such as the engine may surge off idle. There may also be other symptoms.


A code P0402 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
The DPFE (differential pressure) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
There is a blockage in the EGR (most likely carbon buildup)
The EGR valve is faulty
The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum


Possible Solutions: with a P0402, it is common for people to replace the EGR valve, only to have the problem return. The most likely solution is to replace the DPFE sensor.


Check the voltage at the DPFE sensor both at idle and when the EGR is open
Replace the DPFE sensor

P1150 OBD-II Trouble Code - Air/Fuel Sensor Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 Sensor 2)


P1151 OBD-II Trouble Code - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 2
upstream is considered the oxygen sensor for the right side exhaust manifold, before the catalytic convertor. Make sure the sensor's electrical connection is in good condition. On the sensor, test between the terminals with an multimeter/ohmmeter. You should see about 6 ohms at 68*F. If not, replace.

The reason your engine is doing that is because the sensor is failing in such a way that the computer is dumping in extra fuel when it isn't really needed. Then you get the black smoke.

1998 Buick Century Custom 3.1--service engine soon light is on, I check the computer and it says EGR insufficiant flow code P90401. I changed the egr valve lite still on. Went back to Autozone checked...


well I'm a mechanic and you just told me what's wrong....
now all you have to do to fix it is test all parts listed replace the one (s) that fail test....

1999 mercury sable engine code p1744,p0401. Failed e check. EGR looks new, replaced egr solenoid then cleared codes. what more can i do about the p0401 code and the p1744 code Thanks

I have a code 32 and code 13 but my egr valve and oxegen senser is new what else could be wrong?


HI. If you are sure that you purchase the parts and replace them correctly; This will lead to a failed connection at the O2 sensor. Check the O2 sensor harness connections for shorts or an open harness connection. If the sensor is indeed new, i would be most certain that the harness or connector has failed. Now; the EGR valve should have a monitoring pressure sensor and a control solenoid, as well. If you have replaced the previous EGR valve with a new one and installed it correctly; this will lead to a failed sensor or control solenoid. It is easy to test the solenoid. Just pull the vacuum hose off the EGR valve and put your thumb across the vacuum hose opening while the engine is running. You should feel a slight suction at the hose. If not, this will confirm that the control solenoid has failed. replace it in this case. Now; if you do feel the suction from the vacuum hose, that will confirm that the control solenoid is working and you can replace the pressure sensor(DPFE Sensor).

Insufficient egr flow, already replaced egr valve and purge valve canister


I too replaced the egr valve and was discouraged that the check engine light came back on with the same "insufficient flow" code. I took it to my mechanic to put it on the monster diagnostic machine. It said "check all vacuum line, and or map sensor". After looking real close we found a melted vacuum tube, and a cracked vacuum angle connector. Replaced both vacuum pieces, reset the codes, and good to go. If that fails than the next thing is the map sensor, that tells the EGR valve what to do.

The DPFE (Diferential Pressure Sensor)sensor is usually mounted on the engine and is connected to the pipe that runs from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve with two rubber hoses. When the sensor goes bad, the Check Engine light comes on and typically sets any or all of teh following fault codes: P0171 & P0174 (lean codes), and/or P0401 (insufficient EGR flow). Nine out of ten times, the fault is not a bad EGR valve or a vacuum leak, but a bad DPFE sensor. A replacement costs about $112 at Ford, or about $48 at an aftermarket auto parts store.I hope this helps.
