Stopped at a drive through and air conditioner started blowing hot and temperature gauge went up. Turned off air and started back home and temp gauge started falling and went back to normal even after I turned the air on. I checked the coolant and it looked empty. Is this the problem

Most likely, with the engine cold add coolant back until full, (or 50%coolant 50%water) start engine and let it run with the cap off, watch inside of the radiator and make sure U can see the water flowing threw the radiator. It will burp water and coolant out the neck of the radiator. It is common to get a pocket of air in the thermostat housing, if this happens it will over heat after your driving. Hope this helps, and best of luck

You need to add coolant, but have the cooling fans checked to make sure they are coming on,especially when the ac is on.If this was helpful,at all, please rate, thank you..

Hey Rand,
When the engine gets hot enough to stop the A/C from working.. you do have some issues,.. When the thermostat was replaced, was the entire coolant system reverse flushed and cleaned out? If no, its time for a full reverse flush and clean, new thermostat and coolant!

Sounds like the water pump is cavitating . Replace water pump. Check coolant level also. Open the bleeder valve usually located on thermostat housing to remove air from system. close valve when coolant is present while filling. close radiator cap and top off recovery bottle to correct level. These engines are prone to overheating, do not let temp gauge get in the red.

make sure that the coils, ( the ac radiator ) are clean , blow them out with an air hose if you can get a hold of one, also, make sure the ac fan is coming on, it may start , but the sensor may be bad allowing it to turn off too soon , a normal rise in heat is expected when using the AC but if it is too hot you should feel the motor start to run rough, if its running fine, and the temp does move back to normal when the ac is turned off, and a qualified mechanic has checked it, your probably ok, you could have a sensitive gauge, , If the normal range of the gauge moves to hot and back during normal driving without the ac on, that would show the thermostat is also working

Did you recheck the water level at the radiator filler cap after the engine was at normal temperature (ie after about 15 mins idling with heater control on full and fan on Low) because it sounds like there is an air lock in the system. Air lock should clear after thermostat starts to open. This is indicated by the top radiator hose becoming hot to touch.
