Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Am
Turn key to start, let stall and leave key on for 10 min
theft light will go out
do not shut off key and start car

If the anti-theft system has disabled starting the car, then the dealer is a good place to go to find out what to do.
It's their design.
Check your key to make sure that the resistor on it is ok, if that's the kind of key you have.
This happened on my 1997 Cadillac Deville once.
