Question about 2004 Nissan Maxima

My 2004 maxima started acting up, first my gages stopped working, then my car stopped running completely. I can't start it nor can I shift from park into neutral. My gage lights come on but my check engine does not.

We did located the safety neutral on the shifter. We were able to put it into neutral but that is it. Still won't start and now won't go back into park. Check engine light is still not on

If the car shifts in neutral but not in park or drive mode. This indicates problem in shifter switch.Check out for the 12 volts at the switch. Its actually malfunctioning. Also check out the speed sensor on transmission for the gages problem. Also check out the fuses in the fuse box and in the fuse box under the dash. The Maxima has two wires go out to the gas tank sender/level gauge, these two wires report back to what Nissan call the unified meter and air conditioning amp behind the dash. It uses a CAN bus network .check out the voltages at this wires. Also check out fuses #19 10 amp, #12 10 amp, #6 10 amp, #10 15 amp, #11 15 amp, these fuses are all in this circuit.

Also check the dimmer switch of the car controls an instrument dimming module. This module is located under the dash near the steering column and is the most common failures with the dimming circuit. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Its possible that you have any problem with the Neutral Position Switch or Safety Switch, this generally is located mounted on the trans. Check any loss connections or bad harnesses.

Keep in touch.

Generally, when a shift lock solenoid/system goes bad you just zip tie the shift lock to unlocked position and that removes the need to depress the brake to shift out of park.

2004 maxima - transmission stuck w/engine shut off

It sounds like a tork conveter lockup switch, have the transmisson serviced oil and filter changed then and add Lucas transmisson treatment to help smooth out hte shifting pattern and stop the problem if there was drag on the clutches it may have stalled out.

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.

Sounds as if you need the electrical portion of the ignition switch. The contacts inside are most likely worn out.
