Question about 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible

1 Answer

I have a 2003 Beetle and when it starts up it is like it will not take the gas. it pops and sputters and when you give it gas it falls on its face. After it warms up you can drive it fine, only does it when it is first started. Any help on this?

Try to give it gas it just fall on its face and if you hold the throttle down it pops thew the intake

popping through intake is either a timming issue or a worn cam or no oil pressure causing the lifters to fail

Cant open gas cover

I had this happen to me as well on my 2002 New Beetle GLS. It really sucked at the time because I needed to fill up gas immediately at the time to run errands.

My suggestion to open the gas cover:

1. Open the trunk and look on your bottom right, there should be a access panel cover there where you would also go to change your rear brake light bulb.

2. Once you open the access panel, there should be a wire there with either a red or yellow sticker on it. (I admit, that wire is a bit stingy so give it a good quick and hard pull, but gentle.) Pull that wire and VOILA! Your gas cover should open so that you can start filling up again.

Note: If this doesn't work out for you, it could possibly be that either your cable is not working with the actuator or you need to put a new gas cover switch.

I am not a VW Beetle Guru or anything but it might help a bit in troubleshooting. Good luck!

My 2001 new Beetle will not stay running. It starts up, then 5-8 seconds later will sputter out and die. If I pump the gas peddle a bit after it starts, it trys to stay running longer but then sputters out...

Hi There,
Try this: You will need 2 people - Have someone Spray Starting Fluid in the throttle then start the car and have someone spray the fluid continuously into the throttle. If the car continues to run you have a fuel problem, but if it stalls out, replace the coil pak. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!
