HI. There are actually two areas that I would consider to have inspected. If you are indeed hearing a popping sound coming from the engine area(transmission area), this will be a strong indication of transmission failure. This is usually accommodated with surging(jerks), as well. This could be a failing transmission shift solenoid pack or the transmission could also have bad fluid circulating inside(contaminated transmission fluid and filter). With that said, i must direct your attention to another possible area of concern. This will be your timing belt. Unlike chains, the timing belt has to be changed every 60 to 90k. These belts will ware down and cause the same symptoms you are experiencing at this time. I would have this belt inspected, asap. There may be a couple of teeth missing, thus, causing the push rods to fall out of sync. This will damage your engine and cause massive timing issue and engine noises, as well. Have this additional area checked for damage along with the transmission internal parts.

Although i strongly agree with the AMCO diagnosis, I would also advise to inspect that timing belt for damage and slipped timing, as well. Have the PCM scanned for trouble codes at your local auto zone, asap. I suspect that you will have stored codes available.

This is a result of either a bad solder job at the factory or just bad solder. You can remove your gage cluster and remove and resolder the joints at the back of the 2 indicators. there are several sites on the internet that have specific instructions.

97 VW Jetta GLS, manual transmission. The speedometer stopped working & the fuel gauge is jumping around.

Hi Ken You seem to have two faults with your vehicle. One will be a speed sensor and the other possibly a bad connection. Take the vehicle for a diagnostic scan and pin point the problems (which the scan will do) and then sort them out. Regards John

you may have a fluid leak that has left the pan next to empty. check the fluid level, and add if needed. VW need specific tranny fluid. Mobil 1 Dex III will work though.
