Ashley, every once in a great while we technicians run across an engine where you can put the thermostat in backward, most engine's you can't install it backwards but some you can.

This is a good place to start. Check the thermostat and make sure the spring side is going into the engine block, this is the correct way to install it. If the spring side of the thermostat is pointing inside the thermostat housing then turn it over so it's pointing inside the engine block. Refilling radiator


These cars have a closed system as the radiator gets low is sucks coolant from the recovery bottle and as the engine gets hot the expanded fluid goes to the recovery bottle when hot. the recovery bottle is to the left of the radiator You can add there at anytime it is needed. BUT DO NOT TAKE RADIATOR CAP OFF ON A HOT SYSTEM it is pressurized and you will get thermally burnt. check only cold and coolant should be with in a inch of the top. continually adding coolant means the system has a leak.

My radiator on my 86 mazda keeps loosing water


well, check the hoses first...do you see anything wet around the clamps or ends of either of the hoses? If not then look at the radiator cap...is there fluid around it? Look at the overflow bottle that is near the radiator...is it cracked? Finally look straight down at the radiator from above the cap...do you see fluid on ANY part of the radiator? especially down at the bottom of it? Look around the engine bay, do you see splatter marks from fluid hitting the fan? If you see fluid anywhere on the radiator itself fill the radiator back up and run the truck until it gets hot and see if you can spot the leaks. If however, there aren't any obvious leaks at all up front...go look at the heater lines that run into the firewall...if they have any leaks then you've found your solution. Another place to check would be around the water pump...just get a flashlight and look for fluid near the pulley that goes to the water pump. Good Luck

COULD BE THERMOSTAT IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT HOT AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE GOING TO WATER PUMP IS HOT THE THERMOSTAT STICKING PARTIALLY CLOSE.IF TOP HOSE IS HOT THE RADIATOR,ENGINE BLOCK HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING OUT.IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP, FAULTY WATER PUMP WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.REPLACE RADIATOR CAP MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 / 50 MIX SOLUTION ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL ON DIP STICK, IF OIL IN DIP STICK LOOK LIKE MILKSHAKE YOU HAVE BLOWED HEAD GASKET THAT WILL CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING CAR IN SHORT DISTANCE AND ENGINE OVERHEATING.

It overheats and it is leaking antifreeze from the back of the motor and i cant seem to find where it is leaking from


I don't have a Mazda, but could suggest a couple of ideas. Leaks can be a pain to locate, especially in the cramped engine compartment of a mini van. These were designed to be assembled by the factory, not to be easily worked on later.

Are the heater hose lines from your engine to the heater core at the rear of the engine to the fire wall OK? Run you hands along them and see if you get your fingers wet. You could have a leak there.

Is the freeze plug on the engine block OK and not leaking? My Plymouth van had a freeze plug on the block that leaked and I had to replace one. (Real pain) I also had a water pump fail. My water pump was operated by the cam belt. When the bearing fails, the first indication is a small leak. On my vehicle, there was a small passage that would allow fluid to leak near the rear of side of the engine on the passenger side next to the crankshaft pulley. This was designed to keep the fluid off the timing belt. Mine dripped along the casting and dripped on the ground which made it appear to be coming from someplace else. You will have to get under the vehicle with a light to do a more detailed inspection to get an idea of where the leak is coming from.

Depending on your mechanical experience, you might want to have a trusted service station take a look. Just remember, you don't have to have the work done if you don't want to, but they may require an inspection fee. Ask up front.

As far as the overheating you might be low on fluid. Make sure you stay on top of the leak by filling up the radiator over flow bottle and the radiator itself. Do not check the radiator when hot. When the engine is cool, you can remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator directly up with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water if needed. Some coolant is also offered already premixed 50/50 at an auto part store. After filling, with the cap still off, start the engine and turn on your heater to full hot. The pump will lower the coolant level in the radiator as it pushes it through your heater core and engine. Add more fluid until full. When the engine worms up, the fluid will start to expand and start to overflow. Quickly reinstall the cap. Doing this should remove most of the air from your system and take care of your overheating. (I am assuming your pump is working, radiator fan is working, thermostat is opening, and your radiator is not clogged). When your radiator is full of coolant, you can then keep up with the leak demand if it is not excessive by filling up your overflow as needed until your leak is fixed.

Again, leaks can be a pain to find.

I would look for:

· Leaky heater hoses

· Replace radiator cap if over 7 year old

· Overflow bottle has a leak??

· Water pump on engine has a worn bearing and the weep hole is allowing fluid out to indicate a worn out bearing.

Overheat problem: (check in order)

· Leak has caused a large volume of air to enter engine coolant system and it needs to be filled back up.

· Cooling fan on radiator not working.

· Engine thermostat not operating.


I hope these suggestions help you find your leak and deal with your overheating problem.

Low radiator fluid light came on, engine started to smell like burnt wire/oil? Turned off let it cool and than added fluid. Heater now not blowing out hot air. I am plannig on adding more fluid b/c light...


will try to help.let car cool all the way off 1st take radiator cap off, top off w fluid, start car w/ radiator cap off. let it get to operating temperature w/motor running, keep addind fluid, look under car for leaks the whole time please!! if at any time-- you see fluid coming out beyond what you may spill or overfill,,shut the car off!! you may only be low on radiator coolant.with the radiator cap off while filling, you should see the fluid moving[circulating] inside the radiator, bubbles moving downward,,ok spewing upwards out of radiator NO if this repairs good, replace cap and drive 10miles regular speed. no hot,,good,,if hot let cool copletely,check cooling fan relays under hood,black box, look for fan relays, when key is moved back from on to off,,relayshould tick,put your finger on it while someone turns key off to on,WILL NOT SHOCK YOU!! just a very small vibration to fingertip. if this good, with engine running, do engine fan come on to cool, look between radiator and engine,at the fans to insure it;s coming on. you really should be able to hear it, but i prefer to see it visually. My ford ranger keeps running hot. I can drive it and after about 30min. there is not water in the radiator.


Ok ~ Things to check are (simplest first)
1. Examine radiator cap for damaged or leaking seals. (Have it tested at your radiator place.
2. Check for water leaks. At the radiator, rubber hoses including heater hoses. Also cabin heater radiator core.
3. Top up radiator and run engine without the cap fitted. Blip the throttle and see if any bubles or traces of gas appear when you look in the top tank. During this test, check that the top tanks turns "hot" as the thermostat opens. If not, remove and test/replace thermostat.
4. Have a "cylinder leakage test" done at your repair shop.
5. Have the cooling system pressure tested.
6. Add coooling system ceaner to the system and drive for about 30mins. Next, reverse flush radiator and engine block.

This list is in the order you need to procede, and next step should be performed only after the the preceding step tested ok.

I'm losing water out of my radiator but i can't see that it is leaking any where. I'm not sure where the water pump is. For some reason, the water seems to leak out of the over flow when it is hot.


check your radiator cap condition if its ok then your engine must be having a cylinder head gasket problem, normally when engine overheats the cylinder head gasket gets fried-up and the water goes off to the exhaust along with the exhaust gas thats why u dont see any trace of leakage on the floor/ check your engine oil as well if oil and water mix together to conclude the theory.

Check the hose that comes out of the intake manifold to the pipe that goes to the PCV valve. It gets soft, leaks and will collapse. It has a clamp on it at the manifold be careful as the manifold is plastic. Check while it is running. Common problem.

check the condition of the reserve tank and the hose from the reserve tank to the radiator for leaks if no leaks there have the Radiator cap presure tested . also this could be a air lock in the engine if the radiator is new with the engine running and the heater on hot observe the fluid level in the radiator with the cap off if it drops as it warms add more coolant this will purge the air .
