Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I turn the key and I hear a click from the engine compartment. This has happened before and I checked the relay fuse and it was okay but then it mysteriously started. This time I did the same thing and fuses look okay but no starting or even turning over just a click.

That would be your starter. More than likely the bushings went bad. The click is the gear from the starter popping out to crank the engine, but ther is not enough power to turn it. If it is a real hard click. Then it is probably starter. If it is very faint it could be a battery or solenoid problem. The solenoid is located attached to the starter. Since you have to remove starter to replace solenoid, I would take it to the parts store and have it tested so you know for sure before you buy unneeded parts

I have an '04 Sebring Convertible with the 2.7L V-6 engine. It has been running fine with no problems for over a year since I bought it. Then the other day, I had it detailed and drove it home...

This happens all too often on the Chryslers, the starter fuse blowing. The cause in most cases is the starter solenoid. I recommend replacing the starter and the solenoid when this happens, to keep from having to do it again a few months later, I hope this helps.

My saturn was cutting off after awhile, when that happened i checked for fuel and did not have any pressure then i changed the fuel pump and it is still happening and i can not find the fuel pump relay,like...

Okay lets do the first turn the key does the pump come on? okay lets override the fuel pump relay go to the passenger side, when you get there pull the cover on the upper middle console, Now on the cover look for fuel pump relay you found it right? you have 2 ways to override the fuel pump from the relay or test port connection. Now you said relay so find the relay using the panel cover . Identify the relay due to safety and i dont know which one you pulled let activate a relay take the relay cover apart , use a small screw driver or a jack knife and open it dont worry about breaking the cover it will always slip back. with the relay exposed can you collapse the switch together so it will make contact ?good ?if not put a tooth pick in there to get the contact closed. turn key on. stick the relay on now use your finger and collapse it together does the fuel pump turn on. if it doesnt the fuse in the engine compartment may have opened not because of the relay but a bad injector can blow fuel pump fuses.

We have a 1999 GMC Sonoma that won't start. Sounds like the fuel pump isn't functioning---used to hearing a sound right at the time of ignition that is currently not happening. Any ideas?

Check fuse and relay first. If fuse is good, listen to the relay ( in the engine compartment relay box) while someone turns the key on to see if the relay clicks. If it doesn't click, try swapping it with a similar relay, or you can interrogate the relay socket to determine if the VCM is trying to turn the pump on. (Please see my tip at to check the socket) If all of this is working right, use a test light at the fuel tank connector (black and grey wires) to verify the voltage is getting to the pump. If voltage is getting to the pump, but the pump isn't running, replace the pump. Let me know if you have any questions.

No start condition new battery , good starter, turn key to start position light come on dash, go forward to start light go out and you hear click under dash area like relay, no power getting to starter....

no starter relay is always at the fuse relay box at the engine compartment. The relay that you hear is the relay for the accessories to turn off the power during starting position.

Car wont start?

May sound stupid, but use a voltmeter to double check your batteries' charge.

Just cause its new..stranger things have happened..

Check your battery connections? tight?

Check your grounds around the engine compartment frame.

Loose? Rusty?

Check starter ground for same problem.

Check the fuses and relays in the fuse box in the engine compartment.

Your main heavy duty components are fused there.

Good luck.

When you turn the ignition key to start the car what happens? Do you hear a click form the engine compartment. If you do not hear a click, that means the starter solenoid is not working. If the starter solenoid does not energize that there is no voltage applied to the starter. So..... even though the starter has been checked out as good, it cannot work if the starter solenoid doesn't work.

Hope this helps
