If it smokes only on start-up and upon acceleration following release of throttle (such as when making a turn) then you might have bad valve seals. However, given the oil consumption you've stated (assuming that there is NO oil leak externally) you need to check for a PVC valve stuck open due to carbon or paraffin build-up. A stuck PVC valve will definitely cause excessive oil consumption and create smoke.

If you find this solution to be helpful, then please take a moment to rate this post. - Thanks.

Try a different brand of oil,and only fill to between low and full.dont just dump whole pile of oil in.may be overfilling it.if that doesnt work, youll need new rings,or engine o/haul

Its either time for a valve job because the oil may be leaking past the seals, or you have compression issue.. I suspect a valve seal first.

My 2001 hyundai accent uses a lot of oil though there are no sign of leaks or smoke.

what do you consider a "lot" of oil? some use of oil is normal. 1 to 2 quarts between oil changes is normal for an older vehicle.

I put a quart too much oil in my 2001 santa fe. intitally it started sputtering and hesitating with a little smoke, but didn't stall, the check engine light came on, I took it to get an oil change but...

it could have sucked some oil into the air intake and and on the mass airflow sensor. but just one quart shouldnt have caused any adverse effect.

My 2004 e55amg with 103,000 is burning a quart of oil every 400 miles. Not smoking and still has buckets of power..any suggestions why

A good engine shouldn't burn more than a quart every 1000 mi. So, 400 mi. is kind of bad as far as engines go. Probably the oil is blowing by the rings and/or there is a seal leak somewhere. The oil has got to go somewhere whether it leaks out or burns in the combustion chamber.

Maybe you could try a high mileage oil that burns off less easily.

I have a 2001 Chevy Impala 3.8 V-6 and it is using a quart of oil every 800 miles or so. The PCV valve has been replaced, but I fear that the next service visit will result in a much bigger bill. Help...

If you have no leaks, it will be an internal issue that can only be expensive-valve seals (smokes when cold or at start up) or rings (smokes on acceleration, eventually may have issues with catalytic converter)-You are probably using 5W-30 weight oil, consider going to 10W-40 or throw in an occasional bottle of 'stop smoke' additive-while not great, 800 miles per quart is not a disaster (yet) and as long as you change your oil at set intervals (3000 miles or less), don't overheat it, and don't beat on it when cold, it should last many, many more miles.

Smokes blue and white but not burning no oil or

if u have a 302 or 5.0L it probably is early warning signs of burning oil. Check pcv valve and change oil and use a quart of lucas engine restore. It may also be valve stem seals if only smokes when u start it up.

How much oil does my car need and how do i read the dipstick?

If you have the 1.8T it is 4.25qts. After an oil change with a filter change, you have to start the engine to fill the oil filter and then read the level after it has cooled down a bit.

Yes , the white/blue smoke is sign of work piston rings, do a compression test on each cyliner to find out where thee problem is, you will need to change the rings

Burning oil

Hi again,

For some unknown reason(s) the Live Session/Chat was disconnected. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

In any case to finish the 2nd suggestion. You may want to discuss this issue (smoke and oil consumption) with your dealer. Cite a Lexus Technical Service Bulletin specifically addressing this issue "Excessive oil consumption caused by sludge buildup on the cylinder heads. Company is extending warranty. (1997-2001)".

You may want to reference this USA Today article or the discussion in this page.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
