Question about 2003 Dodge Durango

2 Answers

The 4X4 dash warning light is on. The indicator light on the 2HI, 4HI, 4LO selector dial is not lit and 4 wheel drive is not working (the front wheels will not pull). The rear glass wiper does not work. The engine idles rough and will die after revving the engine up and quickly letting off the throttle. All of these symptons come and go together. When the 4X4 dash warning light is off then the 4 wheel drive is possible, the rear glass wiper works, and the engine runs normal. I've checked all the fuses, fixed a bad ground ******** the exhaust to frame connection, and neither made a difference.

I'm interested in checking out the relays as suggested previously. Is there one in particular that I should be interested in?

  • deahl1 Jul 05, 2010

This is very helpful. I was given precise areas to look for grounds....exactly what I was looking for. Thanks.

Check all the fuses in the fuse box and relays located behind the fuse box next to the flasher unit. Also check all the fuses under the hood and in the fuse panel left side of dash. Swap out the relay on back of fuse panel left of steering column next to flasher.
--------

Your vehicle does have a Central Timer Module (CTM). It is located behind the glove box on the right side. Remove the glove box door assembly, then remove a total of five screws. Then remove the CTM through the glove box door opening.
It is either the CTM or a bad ground connection. There are four ground locations to check for looseness and corrosion

  1. Look under the hood. Check the negative battery cable to the frame or fender
  2. Left side (drivers side kick panel) directly under dash. You may need to remove kick panel to check the ground.
  3. Right side (passenger's side kick panel) directly under dash. You may need to remove kick panel to check the ground.
  4. You need to go in through the lift gate, left side, under carpet, mounted to floor pan.

If the problem repeated again n again then its advisable to get car scanned at diagnosis center to get error codes, At diagnosis center you will receive the error code.As per the error code it will detect the exact faulty part in the car due to which the problem is occurring. For more help :--- at www.autozone.com its absolutely free to get car scanned.

I realize this is a tough vehicle problem and intermittent, but how is the battery ground and connection. From a circuit stand point with this vehicle, the common link to all these circuits is the battery ground, or possibly a main relay.

The battery leads were cleaned recently. I forgot to mention this initially.

  • deahl1 Jul 04, 2010

Is there a relay that is in the same circuit as the 4X4 module, rear wiper, and engine idle control? I'm sure the main battery cables are clean.

How do I fix my 99 blazer the dome lights won't turn on and the 4 who drive won't light up or work

In the instrument panel fuse box fuse # 8 CTSY LP 10A ,that's for the dome lights, fuse panel is left side of IP. What are you talking about 4 who drive won't light up or work ? 4 wheel drive ? Do you have two speed automatic or two speed selectable ?
Switch Indicator Lamps Do Not Light - One or More ? Check fuse #15 IP fuse box 10A 4WD . This is for two speed auto !

Circuit Description

The indicator lamps circuits consist of 5 individual lamps contained inside the mode/range switch assembly, they are AUTO, 4WD, 2HI, 4HI, 4LO and NEUTRAL. The AUTO, 4WD, 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO lamps are contained inside their respective range button. When the ignition is ON, the transfer case shift control module illuminates the indicator lamp that corresponds to the current ATC gear position by providing a ground through a current limiting driver.
The transfer case shift control module flashes each indicator lamp after a shift has been requested and will continue to flash until the transfer case shift control module can complete the shift. After a shift to AUTO, 4WD, 2HI, 4HI, or 4LO is made, the transfer case shift control module will flash that indicator lamp until the transfer case shift control module receives a high voltage signal on CKT 1695 from the front axle switch.
A solid state circuit located inside the switch supplies ignition voltage to the lamps. The solid state circuit also receives voltage whenever the headlamp switch is in park or headlamp position. When the solid state circuit receives voltage from the headlamp switch it will reduce the voltage that it supplies to the indicator lamps, dimming the lamps when the headlamps are ON.

Hi, 2hi is your normal driving selection, this is NOT in 4WD mode. Both 4lo and 4hi is for 4 wheel driving, 4lo is used in extreme conditions and will gear the vehicle down to a very slow speed with maximum traction at the wheels, 4hi is for general 4 wheel driving in rough terrain, if you have lights on the dash than it will come on when you change gears, hope this help

Try commanding the drive ranges while in netural cycling them. This may normalize the controller that senses the position from the encoder motor assembly. There maybe a procedure for that in a service manual.
