Idle speed is shaking up and down

black exhaust = over fueling
so there is an injector problem either in the seals under the injectors or in an over pressure problem
The sensor that controls the air / fuel mixtures is the heated oxygen (HO2S) that is in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter and that often fails and so the ECM cannot control the injector operation
have the fault codes run before you waste any more money replacing items not connected to the problem

Suggested Solution 2002 Land Rover Discovery Series II Logo Problem with 2002 Discovery Series II Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start 2002 land rover discovery, starts fine...

The ignition system is controlled by the ECM. Check power at fuse box in on right side under dash. Check fuses right side engine compartmentlower dash panel if all OK check power to ECM located right side "A" pillar in alloy box. this unit could be faulty if no spark at coils, assuming they have been connected correctly. may have to get tested for codes at L/R dealer or someone with test tool. Another source of problem may well be flat battery in transponder key. The indicator light on the dash willflash rapidly for 10 seconds if the vehicle has been unlocked with the remote and the drivers door is opened if the battery in remote is getting low

98 land rover turns over but wont start

Get a used spark plug and hook it to a sparkplug wire and have someone crank it over and ground the plug and see if it sparks if it don't you have a problem with the computer or electronic ignition. Or it could be that it jumped timing.

My oil light comes on, but the oil is full. My rpms fluctuate, or idles and wants to shut down sometimes. Can some one help please.

You oil light does not only show when your oil is low, it also indicates when your oil pressure is low. If the light is staying on all the time, even when at a level, higher rpm, then you most likely have a problem with your pressure and the issue needs to be checked pretty soon. If it is only doing it when your car is idling low, then you just need to take care of your electrical/gas or air intake problem first. The oil light will come on if your car is idling low, but it should go off when you get to speed. Does it go off?

Here it is:

Inspect wiper blades
Lubrucate door locks and ckeck straps, hood latch and safety catch, fuel door hinges
Replace alarm handset batteries

Vehicle interior:
Check park brake and adjust if necessary
check seat belts

Under hood:
Inspect coolant hoses, radiator and AC condenser
Check power steering and (if equipped ) ACE fluid level
Clean battery and terminals
Inspect serpentine drive belt
Change brake fluid
Replace air cleaner element
Change engine coolant
Replace spark plugs

Under Vehicle:
Check body for corrosion
Change engine oil and filter, transfer box oil, transmission fluid,
Check front and rear axle oil level,
Lube drive shafts and U-Joints
Check trailer hitch attachment bolts for tightness
Inspect tires, brake (pads, calipers, discs, lines) exhaust system and heat shields, steering (rods, joints, dust covers,) shocks, supension links and mountings, wheel speed sensors, and height sensor wiring, fuel and hydraulic lines,

Land Rover Recommends Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner replacement at 10 years. Now I do not know anyone who will abide by this as the replacement costs can be as much as $4000.00

Runs rough at idle and take off. runs fine when up to speed

Perform a compression test, if okay, look at plugs and ignition items, then look for intake leaks.

I suspect that you just may not feel the misfire at speed.

Intake based leaks do manifest as per your description, but usually missing is just less noticable at higher engine speeds.

2002 Land Rover Discovery starts but idles rough. accelerates but bucks at cruising speed. solid service engine light at a stop. flashing service engine light when moving....it feels like it's loading...

BAD spark! check plugs wires and coil packs. the wires are a real pain to replace because of the location of the coil packs between the intake manifold and firewall.

1994 Land Rover Discovery oil light comes on after running 20 minutes. Oil change kept the light off until the next time I ran it longer at highway speed. I added oil stabilizer when I changed the oil but...

If you want to test the oil pressure sending unit, let me know. I can assist with that.

It could be that your engine oil pressure is indeed low -- how many miles on the engine?
