220 to 230 deg. F is actually normal for the 1998 Cadillac Deville. If it goes to 250 deg. F or even 260 deg. F it goes into a limp mode where fresh air is pumped into 1/2 of the cylinders to preserve the engine up to 40 mi. of travel (in the case that a radiator fan isn't working or coolant has completely leaked out of the system).

If a half gallon of water is gone in the system and you keep losing it, there is a leak in the system say in the water pump o-ring or the radiator, or a hose.

I got a 98 ford taurus sho and I replace the thermostat and it still is getin hot today I drove it to work witch is about 30 miles what's the deal

OK, how hot does it get? It's normal for a vehicle on a hot day to get up to 220 deg. F or 230 deg. F and function normally. There is nothing wrong with cars that get this hot, and in a sealed cooling system of 15 psi or so, there should be no driveability problems stemming from this.

If you were able to travel 30 miles and not boil over, then it's probably, ok.

Make sure your fan is turning on regularly for the radiator, and that you're not losing fluid. Your car should be fine.

3.1 L runs very warm 200-220 but not in the hot range All fan relays have been replaced, Could it be the water pump, its not leaking but circulation is slow? 170,000 + miles all original.

I have a 2000 malibu with the 3.1 and it runs about 2 lines over half on a hot day. and about half on a cool day. I have flushed system, changed thermostat, and replced the coolant and it still runs like that. I think all 3.1 run warmer than usual. as long as it does not over heat and it has all working I think this is normal. because the engine operating tempurature is about 220 degrees. as you said it may be yor water pump!!

YOU COULD HAVE A DEFECTIVE WATER PUMP OR THERMOSTAT ALSO RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.MAKE SURE YOUR WATER PUMP IS BEING TURNED BY DRIVE BELT.NOT SLIPPING.MAKE SURE COOLANT SYSTEM HAS BEEN BLED AND YOU HAVE HALF ANTIFREEZE HALF WATER.CHECK YOUR CRANKCASE WHEN CAR COOLS DOWN.IF OIL STILL LOOK LIKE MILK SHAKE.YOUR NEW HEAD GASKETS LEAKING.THE MECHANIC WHO REPLACED HEAD GASKET DIDNT DECK THE HEADS.THEY PROBABLY NEED SHAVED A LITTLE SO HEAD GASKET WILL SEAL.

Are cooling fans working? if so when they do work, the air coming through the radiator should be HOT, ROASTING AIR, if not the radiator isnt flowing coolant.how does it run after sitting all night at first start, does it run rough 5-10 seconds? if so, may have head gasket issues. BIG BUCKS........
