If it is an auto trans with column shift, that switch is on the steering column, above the brake pedal, close to the floorboard.
Might need to lower the upper end of the steering column where it bolts under the dash to get to it.

When performing service around the SIR system components or wiring, the SIR system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded SIR system repairs.

  1. Make sure the switch is in the off position.
  2. Remove the steering wheel as outlined in this section. Fig. 1: Retaining ring removal whear is the safty neutral switch at for a 1991 - 84908091.gif

  3. Remove the instrument panel trim cover.
  4. Insert a screwdriver into the lockplate cover slot and pry out the cover. Remove the lockplate. A special tool is available to do this. The tool is an inverted U-shape, with a hole for the shaft. The shaft nut is used to force it down. Pry the wire snapring out of the shaft groove. Discard the snapring.
  5. Remove the tool and lift the lockplate off the shaft.
  6. Remove the turn signal lever screw and lever.
  7. Press the hazard button inward and unscrew it.
  8. Remove the switch retaining screws. Pull the switch connector out of the mast jacket and feed the switch connector through the column support bracket.
  9. Position the turn signal lever and shifter housing in the downward, or "low" position and pull downward on the lower end of the column using a pliers on the tab provided. Remove the wire protector.
  10. Remove the switch mounting screws. Remove the switch by pulling it straight up while guiding the wiring harness cover through the column. To install:
  11. Install the replacement switch by working the connector and cover down through the housing and under the bracket.
  12. Install the switch mounting screws and the connector on the mast jacket bracket. Install the column-to-dash trim plate.
  13. Install the flasher knob and the turn signal lever.
  14. With the turn signal lever in neutral and the flasher knob out, slide the thrust washer, upper bearing preload spring, and canceling cam into the shaft.
  15. Position the lockplate on the shaft and press it down until a new snapring can be inserted in the shaft groove.
  16. Install the cover and the steering wheel

Why wont my brake light turn off on a 1991 chevy c1500

sounds like the brake switch is sticking. its on top of brake pedal arm. when applying brakes the pedal makes contact with the switch and turns on brake lights. if the switch sticks or its out of adjustment brake lights will stay on.

Will a 4L60E out of a 93 chevy silverado heavy half 4x4 work in a 96 chevy 1500 suburban 4x4?

there are a few differences in 96 there is a range indicator switch which also works as a neutral safety switch mounted on the selector shaft. if the 93 tranny is original it wont have the bosses to mount that switch.

1991 chevy c1500 manual trans won't shift

Is the clutch working? Will it roll freely when engaged? If so then it probably is just the linkage sync in the top of transmission. Or it is stuck in probably first or third? Not positive how that one is. But there is three movable linkages. 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and R. In order to shift a different one the one your on has to go back to neutral or the other one won't shift. The gearshift probably jumped over to one that won't move. And you have to take it off and set them back to neutral and put it back together.

Or It has broken gears, which would have to be real bad to keep it out of all gears.

I hope this helps. Too late Im sure.

1991 Chevy K1500 4wd transmission stuck

More than likely the trans is not stuck in neutral, it could possibly be low on fluid. That is the first thing I would check. If it is full then try putting the transfer case into 4X4 high and then low and see if it will move. If it does after you do this, then the problem would be inside of the transfer case. If it does not move in any gear it would more than likely be a internal failure of the trans.
