Question about 1987 Chevrolet El Camino

1 Answer

I drilled a small hole in the dash near lower area of gauges to run a wire . I know that I hit what seemed like a silver strip . I now have no dash lights no turn signal light , and the gas gauge reads full all the time .when I turn on the ing. key the gas gauge pegs even further past full .did I destroy the ground or power to these items? All the other gauges work fine . I would like to get the gas gauge to work if nothing else .I really dont want to tear the dash all arart .If I must then I must

Hi! You may not have damaged the fuel gauge. It sounds like a fuel gauge fuse problem to me. Please do check the fuel gauge fuse for inaccurate reading means the fuse is faulty. Please check the fuse and replace. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Where is the best place to run a power cable from battery to inside the vehicle?

If that is true..It may be above just under the dash.. Some wiring connects directly to the fuse block inside the vehicle. I you are thinking about running a hot wire directly from the battery and you drill a hole make sure there are no components in the way , you put a rubber grommet in the hole and seal it once the wire it run through.. And be certain to fuse the wire. Check online for wiring schematics and you may not have to drill a hole. Also some vehicles PCM;s are affected by additional circuits ..check with the dealership.

Read the alarm installation manual carefully and keep the support number handy if you have any questions as every alarm manufacturer uses different connection and mounting techniques. Open the hood and disconnect the positive battery cable. Connect the alarm power wire to the positive battery cable and run it to the driver side of the firewall.
Locate an open area in the engine bay and mount the siren, facing the engine to limit water exposure while driving. Run the siren wires to the driver side's of the firewall and feed all of the wires through the firewall and into the dash area of the Impala. Drill a small hole in the firewall if necessary, directly in front of the steering wheel.
Remove the lower dash panel if necessary and mount the shock sensor per the manufacturer's instructions. Locate the power lock relay if the car is so equipped and connect the alarm's power lock module.
Find the starter wire in the ignition harness and attach the start disable relay. Drill a small hole in the dash for the LED light and snap it into place.
Connect all of the wires to the alarm control module by plugging them into the module and secure it as far into the dash as possible with zip ties.
Reconnect the positive battery and test the alarm on the Impala. Adjust the sensitivity level as desired and secure any loose wires with zip ties.

NO NEED TO REMOVE WHOLE DASHBOARD!!! REMOVE TWO7MM SCREWS FROM THE BOTTOM OF STEERING PANEL & PRY AND REMOVE PANEL.

NEXT YOU WILL SEE 0NE 7MM SCREW BY GEAR SELECTOR AREA.. BEHIND THE LOOSE PANEL REMOVE THIS SCREW.. ALSO IN SAME AREA BUT LOWER THERE IS ONE 7MM SCREW THAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED THAT HOLDS LOWER DASH PAD ITS FOUND BEHIND LOWER CORNER OF DASH PAD.( LOWER DASH PAD GAS PEDAL AREA )
"DON'T"!!! REMOVE THE FOUR 10MM BOLTS!!!! IN SAME AREA
NEXT REMOVE RADIO /AC CONTROL TRIM WITH THIN SCREW DRIVER OR PANEL TOOL IT HELD IN BY SIX CLIPS...NO NEED TO DISCONNET ANYTHING IT WILL STAY THERE HANGING!!

The key to my 05 Lacross does not have metal in the key ring hole and the plastic broke. How do I repair? can I drill a new hole without damaging the chip?

Hi, the only part that dont have the circuit under neath is the part that has broken off the only chance you might have of finding somewhere to drill through is if you take the key apart and have a look on the inside and see if their is a small gap you can drill through.

if you just drill through without taking the case off you will never know whats under neath, now with the case off you may find a small part near the back of the key next to the part that broke off but it will only be a small area, so if you take the case off and drill a hole you will probably need one of those straps that go through a mobile phone, you know the string type that you feed through the hole on a mobile well you may be able to drill a small hole big enough to put this string through, but you wont be able to drill a hole big enough to put the metal ring through on its own.

if you can get the case off without damaging it then have a look at the back part near to the part that broke and you should find a small area to drill through, please dont drill anything without taking the key fab apart as you will drill through the circuit, its not worth guessing as damaging this could mean your car wont start.

failing that replacing the key is the only option

take the case off and have a look first just take your time and try not to break anything inside the key, if you have messed about fixing things before then you should be able to take the case off the key.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

My 98 malibu gas gauge has gotten stuck under the little projectile. how do i take the dash apart to move it back above the little stick:

The easiest way is to drill a little hole in the clear plastic that you look thru. Run a small piece of stiff wire in and spin it back around I have done this many times otherwise you have to pull the whole cluster which isn't any fun.

Installing an Amateur Radio Transceiver

Before you drill, I would DEF suggest that you take the console up & out, and inspect under it where you want to place your receiver. My reason is as follows: Under the console, there is the main ECU for the air bag system, with a bunch of wires going to & from it. Damaging just one of these wires may compromise your air bag system. A very expensive undertaking, as "repairs" to the air bag wiring harness are NOT recommended. Replacement of a damaged harness would be the correct path of repair. You may not encounter any of these wires, BUT, it is much better to be sure of what you may encounter where you are going to drill.
