Question about 1999 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

I was driving on the highway in my 1999 mercury cougar when i looked down at my dashboard, i noticed my gauges were all down and the car felt like it was slowing down even though i didnt let off of the gas. i managed to get to the shoulder on the highway before it died. i tried starting it and it took 2 or 3 tries but then it started back up again. once i was close to my destination it started to die again and i turned off my radio and a/c and that stopped it from dying and now im scared to drive that car

The best thing to do is take the car to your local auto parts store and borrow (for free) there on board diagnostics (OBD II) scan tool. This electronic tool hooks up underneath the drivers side steering wheel and it will obtain the trouble codes stored inside your Mercury Cougar's computer. Write the code numbers down and then look in the black of a Haynes repair manual (also at the store) and match the codes up to the trouble codes listed in the back of the repair manual. This will save you time and money because you won't replace parts that need to be replaced.
