You need to get a chilton or haynes manual, so it can give you the correct location of the keyways for corect timing

Is it possible for the water pump gasket to wear out and start leaking before the water pump goes?

Yes, it is very possible. Most water pumps last a good while as long as they have good coolant levels running through them. The gaskets on them can wear because of the heat on the engine. It is fairly simple to change the gasket, but most throw a water pump on regardless since it has to be pulled off anyway.

Better to go ahead and replace what you can while you are down there to prevent having to do it in the future. I usually tend to keep my old parts though if they are still good as back ups.

Need to replace water pump on 94 Plymouth Acclaim

Your water pump is driven by your timing belt which should be changed at same time unless it was done recently. If your still thinking of doing it, stop in at local parts store for info on what's involved, parts prices etc., and decide from there. I believe some even give you a step by step print out now too.
