Your tensioner will be the pulley that doesnt drive anything, if it needs replacement then you can start the engine and you will see it either wobbling, or making a severe squeeling noise, so it will tell you where it is pretty much for sure just by the fact if its faulty

1995 nissan maxima alternator replacement

1995-98 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the splash guard on the right side of the vehicle.
  3. Loosen the alternator belt idler pulley.
  4. Slip the drive belt off the alternator pulley.
  5. Remove the four air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the radiator fan and fan shroud.
  7. Move the air conditioning compressor forward.
  8. Disconnect the alternator harness connector.
  9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts, and lower the alternator from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Hold the alternator in place and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Plug in the alternator harness connector.
  3. Move the air conditioning compressor back into location.
  4. Install the radiator cooling fan and shroud.
  5. Install the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Place the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
  7. Tighten the drive belt to the proper tension with the idler pulley.
  8. Install the splash guard.
  9. Connect the negative battery terminal.
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

Easy to do, but also easy to do wrong.

1. Find the belt.
2. Find the belt tensioner.
3. Find the belt tensioner adjuster screw.
4. Loosen the adjustment screw, and slack the belt.
5. Remove the belt.
6. Replace the belt.
7. Tension the belt using the adjustment on the belt tension adjuster.
8. Drive around and steer, easily.

Enjoy.

We need to replace a fan belt that broke. Does

You can do it. If it takes longer than 10 minutes something is wrong. If its a V8 make sure the tensioner is good, Fan belts rarely just "break" so check all the pulleys.

Replace belts

If memory serves, you have an idler pulley near the top of the engine. This pulley has a tensioning bolt that is secured with a "set"nut. the nut will need to be loosened and by turning the bolt, you will notice the pulley either tension the belt or you will be backing tension off of it. Obviously, you need the tension backed off to the point that you can remove the belt. The other belt is tensioned by a similar device on the alternator, the same process applies. You will likely encounter problems getting the belts around the fan and the fan shroud, like a puzzle. If need be, you can remove the shroud, but it is not necessary. Good Luck. I hope this is helpful!

Replacing a Tensioner Pulley on 1994 F 350

Release belt tension and remove belt. You will need a 1/2" drive breaker bar or ratchet to release tensioner. Be sure to note routing of belt on pulleys for reinstallation in case the diagram decal is gone. Remove the mounting bolt and remove tensioner. Note that there is a locating pin on the back that must engage the hole in the mounting bracket. Line up the locating pin on the new tensioner with the hole in the mounting bracket. Install the tensioner mounting bolt, making sure the locating pin stays lined up. Torque to specs and reinstall the belt according to the diagram on the hood or fan shroud. Be sure all grooves of belt line up in pulleys to avoid damage. If it is just the pulley or bearing that's bad, you can sometimes purchase these separately and use the old tensioner assembly.

Replace the timing belt tensioner on a 1990 Nissan Sentra

The belt tensioner is located under the timing cover. It is 1 1/2 round and about 3/4 inch with a groove in the middle where a bolt is tightened. When you remove the timing cover you will see the timing belt, the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft gear. The timing belt goes around these components.. The belt tensioner is loosened and the new timing belt is placed. The sproket also has to be replaced if it is broken. Be careful to notice the little marks that are aligned on the sproket and above the camshaft.. They can be small arrows that have to be aligned exactly the way you took them off. replace the belt and you tighten the tensioner so the belt fits snug and tighten the bolt in the middle of the belt tensioner. It is not too difficult, if you know something about mechanics. If you don't, you will be better of taking it to somebody who does know.
