Ran out of gas and wont start

94 Ford Ranget ran it completly out of gas I put 4 gals of gas in it and I cant get it to start. The engine turns over good and strong , but acts like it not getting any fuel . I was told their might be a switch or button i'd have to push or pull should this happen. I can't get anymore detailed than that.

Im a single mom and not mechaniclly inclined so any detailed information you can give me would be greatly appriciated.
thank you

Hi Terri. The Fords have a thing on them known as an 'inertia switch'. The switch is a safety, in the event of a crash, it will shut the flow of gas to the engine off so the car doesn't catch fire in the engine comp't. Also, the inertia switch is vacuum operated, meaning that it needs a constant supply of fuel going through or it will lose the ability to push, or allow fuel to get to the engine. Now, there is a reset for the switch located up under your dash board, probably on the drivers side, in toward the center console, or possible just to the right of the gas pedal. It looks like a black box with a step on it and should be labeled as such (it will say 'inertia reset' or something similiar on it). Just push the button and the switch is reset which will allow the vacuum to reset and allow gas to pass from the gastank to the engine. Good luck.

I have a 1999 ford contour after I ran out of gas, I added 2 gal of gas and it won't start"

It is possible that when you ran out of gas air got into the fuel lines. What you will need to do is turn the key into the run position(not into the start position) and leave it for 30 - 60 seconds. This should engage the fuel pump and allow it to pressurize the system. After letting it sit try and start the engine letting it crank for 5 - 10 seconds at a time. You may need to repeat the process a few times. It is also possible that when you ran out of fuel you damaged the fuel pump and it may need replacing. When you put the key into run see if you can hear the fuel pump running. I hope this helps you out.

Ran out of gas,put 4 gals in wont start tried starting fluied wont start

Sounds like the ignition system is not firing the spark plugs if starting fluid and gasoline doesn't solve the problem.

Verify by putting a spark tester on one of the spark plug boots and attaching the spark tester to the engine block or ground.

Ran out of gas,put 2 gals in tank got it started drove 25 miles, now it wont start. engine cranks but wont start and cant smell even the faintes hint of gas....

the debris from the bottom off the tank may have clogged the fuel filter and or the injectors. theres no fuel getting into the engine, change fuel filter, thats about $25.00. if problems persists try an injector cleaner.

Ran out of gas, now wont start

if it was out of gas completely, after filling with at least 5 gal, turn key on, without starting. You will hear pump come on. After pump stops, turn key off. Repeat this procedure three times an the engine should start after the third time.

Let me know,

dont do it. fuel injectors fuel filters and plugs may need to be replaced I would not take the chance. some people say fill the tank the rest of the way with regualr unleaded gas I say "NO" there is to much at stake like a complete cleanout of the engine and fuel system and this could cost thousand yes thousands of dollars
