Depends on the model car.

lots of times, the condition you describe is a crankshaft position sensor, particularly if the car starts after a couple of hours of sitting.

Can you get somebody to do a diagnostic check using an OBD scanner (hand held diagnostic device..) ?

There's a few causes of the symptoms you describe including coil/ignition pack and crankshaft sensor.

Don't go buying and fitting parts in the hope of curing the problem .. get a diagnostic check done first and identify what the problem is

Dakotas and Durangos are notorious for faulty crankshaft sensors. The symptoms you describe fit. There are other things it could be, but that would be my first inclination.
