The filter is tucked up behind the fuel tank and mounted to the frame rail. The tank must be lowered to reach the filter, so plan on changing the filter when the fuel tank is nearly empty.
The procedure to replace the fuel filter on 1998 dodge stratus is as follows:- 1) Raise the rear of the car with a jack and support it on jack stands. Remove the jack but keep it handy because you are going to use it again. 2) Open the trunk of your car and fold back the carpet on the left side of the trunk. Locate the fuel pump electrical connector and unplug it.  3) Push the wiring harness and connector through the hole in the floor where it comes into the trunk. 4) Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the fuel tank and place a drain pan under the drain. Remove the plug with a wrench and allow any fuel to drain out of the tank. Replace the drain plug and tighten it with a wrench. 5) Support the fuel tank with a floor jack and with a socket and ratchet, remove the retaining bolt on the driver's side fuel tank strap. Loosen the bolt on the passenger's side strap as well, but do not remove it. 6) Lower the jack, allowing the tank to drop on the driver's side of the car. Do not remove the jack--keep it under the tank for support. Remove the fuel lines from the filter using a set of fuel line disconnect tools. 7) Remove the mounting bolt securing the filter to the frame of the car and remove the filter. The filter is out now. 8)Install a new filter in its place. Install the retaining bolt for the filter and tighten it with a ratchet and socket. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

its in the fuel tank. you will have to drop the gas tank to change it. support car, disconnect fuel and vacuum lines to tank, disconnect fuel filler tube(hose you put gas into car), disconnect the electrical connections, support fuel tank, undo the fuel tank straps and lower fuel tank, clean area around fuel tank unit, remove the unit lock ring and pull out unit, follow the instructions that come with the new fuel pump and re-assemble in reverse order, replace the fuel filter at the same time.

Evap system

The FSM is clear on this. each hose and fitting must be air tight.
or the the car vents gas fumes full time, and the EVAP ECU tests
(monitor) make sure this all works.
you can just look at the left and right side above rear tires. and see
if your hands are small enough to fit here. Id bet not.
some mech, report, the tank can be tilted down at front (drained fuel)
and gain access.
keep in mind, you get fuel siphoning at any time. do not open the system, with fuel in the tank, and then drive to autozone,
i loosen the gas cap so that pressure can not build in tank.
expanding fuel can push fuel out , during a filter change. very
dangerous in a garage, and you gone.
it's just a vent hose, you can see, it and what needs to be done is really obvious. given you arms sides and lenght.
my fsm states, " TANK pull"

Removal & Installation

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fuel filler cap from the fuel tank.
  3. Have a Class B fire extinguisher near the work area. Use a hand operated pump device to drain as much fuel through the fuel filler neck as possible.
  4. Use a siphon to remove the remainder of the fuel in the tank by connecting the siphon to the fuel pump outlet fitting.
CAUTION Never drain or store fuel in an open container because there is the possibility of a fire or an explosion.
  5. Reinstall the fuel filler cap.
  6. Remove the rear seat cushion from vehicle (if so equipped).
  7. Disconnect the fuel pump motor connector and sending unit electrical connectors.
  8. Disconnect the wire harness grommet and harness through the vehicle floor pan.
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10. Remove the fuel filler hose clamp from the filler neck assembly.
  11. Remove the fuel breather hose clamp from the filler neck assembly.
  12. Remove the fuel filter inlet hose clamp and hose from the filter.
NOTE A small amount of fuel may be released after the fuel hose is disconnected. In order to reduce the chance of personal injury, cover the fitting to be disconnected with a shop towel.
  13. Remove the fuel vapor clamp and hose, and fuel return hose clamps and hose from the respective fuel lines.
  14. Using a suitable transaxle jack, support the fuel tank.
  15. Remove the fuel tank retaining bolts and lower the tank.
To install:
  1. Reconnect all fuel hoses, lines and the fuel breather hose to the fuel tank.
  2. Place the fuel tank in its proper space using the transaxle jack, Install the fuel tank retaining bolts.
  3. Remove the transaxle jack.
  4. Reconnect all fuel hoses, lines and the fuel breather hose to the fuel tank.
  5. Install the fuel breather hose and hose clamp to the filler neck assembly.

Remove gas tank

HI, you will need to remove as much fuel as possible, then raise the van up and support it so there is enough room under the van to drop the tank out.
1) remove the fuel line from the fuel filter and the return line .
2) you will see a black EVAP canister by the fuel filter you will need to disconnect the lines from it. The remove the lines from the fuel tank that run from the canister.
3) Loosen the clamps on the fuel filler neck and pry the neck away from the tank. there will be a small vet line running to the filler neck this also needs to be removed.
4) you will need to support the tank and remove the 3 bolts holding the straps. then lower the tank down.

How do i take off the gas tank of a dodge caravan

First disconnect the negative wire from battery. Raise the rear othe van and use jackstands to support it. Remove the filler cap and disconnect the filler line to tank. Connect a hose and drain or siphon fuel out of tank into a fuel container. Remove the screws from the filler tube to the van body. Disconnect all wiring and hoses from the tank and mark each to help you remember how to put it back together. Remove the mounting bolts and nuts, lower the tank slightly and remove the filler tube. Lower the tank more and support it while disconnecting the rollover/vapor separator valve hose. Then remove the tank. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to have a fire extinguisher (class b type) to use incase of a fire. Hope this will help you.

Hi there i got a 99 chevy Malibu ..whats the steps to uninstall the gas tank ??

1- remove fuel from tank, 2- take and loosen the tank straps, lower tank down far enough to disconnect the wiring and fuel lines.then lower tank to the ground. you may have to loosen the screws for the filler neck hose, inside of filler door to remove filler hose from tank. take off lock ring on fuel pump and pull pump out of tank, be carefull you may have to wiggle it out of tank as not to harm filter unless changing it. before starting on tank. disconnect battery as not to get any sparks. to install is reverse of removal.

Change the fuel pump 1997 chevy fuel pump

the fuel pump resides within the gas tank and removal of the tank itself is required to reach it ...you will need some tools and a jack a 2x4 gas cans a syphon hose to syphon off most of the gas to make it easier a chisel a hammer a jack and jack stand for safety reasons and a bit of patience and mechanical ability /1st i would disconnect the battery + for safety syphon off as much gas as possible , raise the vehicle and use jack stand remove the drivers rear tire , use penetrating oil on the 2 bolts/nuts to the tank disconnect either the filler neck or at the hose and filler pipe but be careful not to allow dirt to get into the tank , loosen the 2 nuts /bolts and get the jack and 2x4 under the tank and remove the 2 nuts./bolts keeping the tank up by jack remove out the way the 2 straps and begin to lower the tank ..1/2 way down reach in and disconnect the power as well as the lines into the tank to allow you to getthe tank down without breaking the lines going in {this may be the hard part just a note }
once the lines are disconnected lower the tank and watch the filler neck while doing so ,once the tank is on the ground bring it out from under the vehicle and remove the retaining clip with the chisel counterclockwise to remove it careful not to bend or disturb the float the pump is now visable as well as the filter to it remove and replace it the way you removed it .........replacing it is the exact reversal of the procedure
