The belt may be out a couple of teeth and it has upset the timing
check that the cam gear and the mark on the crankshaft pulley are lined up properly with their marks

87 buick century 2.8 has spark, and fuel, no start, backfires thru intake-not all the time, timing chain, and gears replaced, timing is correct, replaced icm, cam sensor. any suggestions?

double check the coil pack wiring to be sure they are correct-popping through the intake is usually an indication of bad mechanical timing (I know you said you checked it but that is a big possibility) or a leaking intake valve-or wires not run properly to the plugs.mikemt_18.gif

1987 Buick Electra Hard Starting

Timing gear may have lost its teeth. Sounds like it has jumped a tooth or so. Common problem on 3.8 vin code 3 engine for 87. To replace it you will need a front cover gasket set, timing ger set,new design tensioner, cam thrust spring & button and magnet.

These motors use a chain and gears. Yes it could be broken. Disconnect power to the coil. Take distributor cap off see if rotor button is turning while someone cranking engine.

Belt, remove the the front plastic cover which covers the Timing Belt to see if the belt is stripped of teeth, same as the old Ford Pinto motor.. remove dist cap and watch rotor rotation, see if it is spinning... Ignition Modules are a major issue with those in that year also... check module also...

My 1987 buick electra will die and not restart when it gets up to temperature

Replace crank sensor. Next time it cuts off spray or pour water on the crank sensor and see if it will start.
