Question about 1993 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

We changed the float in the fuel tank, but the gauge still does not register. Is there a fuse for the float since the low fuel warning does not come on either

faulty fuel gauge sender unit, inside your fuel tank, bolted to the top and hangs down inside, uses a float and arm to give signal to fuel gauge.

Fuel gauge low fuel warning light comes

Usually attached to the Sending Unit of fuel pump(in the tank). The module will get its signal from the float arm. Look for components that touch the fuel pump float arm, then trace the wires. Keep us informed =D

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls with a fuel gauge that does not work (gauge may be reversed)??? help please.

The fuel level indicating system is a magnetic type system, which consists of the sending unit located in the fuel tank, an anti-slosh module located on the back of the instrument cluster, and a fuel gauge located in the instrument cluster. The sending unit changes resistance according to the level of fuel in the fuel tank, which varies the current flow through the gauge. The pointer position varies proportionately to the current flow. In this system, the sending unit resistance is low (22 ohms) when the fuel level is low and high( 145 ohms) when the fuel level is high. The pointer of the magnetic gauge remains in position when the ignition is turned to the Off position. On some models, an anti-slosh module is used to dampen out fluctuating fuel signals from the sender. Some vehicles are equipped with a low fuel warning indicator. The anti-slosh module will also actuate the low fuel indicator when the fuel level in the tank reaches 1/16 to 1/8 full.

Do your other gauges/warning indicators work properly with the ignition on? If not, check for power at the fuse panel/fuses.

If they do then partially remove your cluster with connector still installed and check for voltage at cluster connector and gauge. Check continuity of cluster and gauge for ground.

Sometimes the anti-slosh module (if installed) goes bad in the Grand Marquis but not likely.

Sender troubleshooting:
  1. Perform test with resistors as follows:
    1. Disconnect wiring connector at sender unit, then connect resistor between gauge lead and a suitable ground.
    2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
    3. With 145 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Full mark.
    4. With 22 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Empty mark.
  1. Perform test with fuel sender of known quality as follows:
    1. Turn ignition to Off position.
    2. Disconnect wiring connector from sender and connect it to test sender.
    3. Move float rod away from fuel filter against Full stop position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or above the Full mark.
    4. Move float rod toward fuel filter against Empty stop position. Turn ignition switch to Off position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or below the Empty mark. If gauge works properly replace sender, which involves dropping fuel tank.

Is there a relay for the gas gauge on a 1995 ford contour

Normally no. The fuel gauge reads by resistance, the position of the float in the fuel tank, that voltage is directly sent to the gauge. There is also usually a warning light that operates off of this same system but it reports when the float level is extremely low only.

If the gauge isn't working, you may want to inspect the wiring harness at the fuel tank to make sure everything is intact, nothing frayed, pulled loose, or broken under there. If the pump has been replaced, sometimes the fuel float gets into a bind when installed improperly.

Usually the only other thing that has an impact on the fuel gauge is the ground circuit to the dash display.

Good luck !

Fuel gauge does not move, stays on E, after car starts. Low fuel light is not coming on.

Hello graytape, was the fuel gauge and low fuel light working and then one day just stopped working?, if so, you have probably blown a fuse and you should be able to locate what fuse and where it's located in the owner's manual.
If you recently got the vehicle and then you found out that the gas gauge and low fuel light doesn't work then that is something completely different.
without knowing the year of the vehicle I can only give you an educated guess.
Many vehicles have a float in the gas tank and this float is directly linked to what you see on the gas gauge. However, after a number of years the floats get saturated from the fuel and become heavy, heavy enough to where they don't float anymore. That is one of the most common causes of the fuel gauge not working.
The sensor that activates the low fuel warning light may be independent of the fuel gauge and the fuel in the tank isn't low enough to turn it on. Your tank has to be very low to activate the low fuel warning light.
Good luck!

The fuel gauge didn't go up to full right away after filling. It took almost 20 miles of driving but it finally registered full. Driving with the odometer showing so I can keep an eye on it to see if it...

How low was the tank, prior to filling it up...You most likely have a floating needle on the gauge...It's not uncommon for it to take a few minutes to register full, but 20 miles is a tad long...Could have been air in the system if you got really low on fuel...I'd do as you mentioned and keep an eye on it before I sought further help...tg

1996 Jeep Grand Cheroke Laredo...Ran tank low on fuel. Then after filling up would not start, while at the pump. So changed fuel filter...no start. Then changed fuel pump. Now does start and run yea! ...

Likely you did a bad thing to the tank float when working on it If so, it will need to be taken down (again) and checked. First though check that the gauge is getting power at the attachment harness (pump and power side should have a voltage pulse and good tank grounding.)
