Question about 2000 Mercury Cougar

Open Question

I have a 2000 cougar with the trouble code P0708, I have not been able to find a service manual for this car so I am lost on how to correct the shifting problem and clear the code, I am assuming there is an adjustment which needs to be made but without a manual I have no idea where to start,

2000 mercury cougar will not start

If it is getting spark I will assume the timing belt is working.
You say the fuel pump is good, so what is the fuel pressure at the rail ?
Are the spark plugs wet or dry ? Can you get it to try to start by using starting fluid ?
You may have to get someone to check the computer for trouble codes which requires a scanner or code reader.

This could be as simple as a bad transmission temperature sensor or a Neutral Safety Switch. Have the Neutral Safety Switch checked out first because the Transmission Temp. Sensor is fairly expensive.

Engine light on

Your inquiry only says "engine light on". That's not much to go on. All I can suggest is to have the engine scanned for trouble codes in order to find out what the check engine light is for. Then we can try to make a diagnosis based on the trouble codes.
