Water in gas tank

We accidently put gas that contained 80% water in our gas tank. we have since drained the tank and the car still wont start? we are hoping we do not have to buy a new fuel pump which is $550.00. should we try changing the fuel filter? what else could be wrong? or should we try? thank you!!

I would get some fresh gas, about 2 gallons in the tank, a couple cans of dry gas, to soak up the water, and get that thing fired up and drive it till it is empty. Then put in some fresh gas, and another can of dry gas, by then , you should have a nice clean engine and a clean tank. If you have to pull the air horn off and squirt some fuel into the throttle, do it, just to get it going. Once it starts, don't let it quit if you can help it, keep revving it and drive it. It will sput and cough bu it should be ok. The fuel pump should be fine and the filter will clean itself out of the water. Hope this helps.

Remove gas from tank

You can either siphon the liquid out of the tank or buy a hand pump and pump it out. You can get a hand pump at any automotive supply store (NAPA, Autozone) or Walmart automotive department. To siphon the liquid out get a length of hose and put it into the tank. Suck on the hose until the fluid is coming out of the hose and then lower the end of the hose to a level below the tank itself and let it drain into a container.

Be VERY careful with what you drain out. Even if it isn't all fuel it can still burn under the proper conditions. It is also not healthy for pets or children if they get into it. Dispose of the liquid properly. A service station may take it for you, or an auto supply store may be able to take it. If all else fails check with your local trash collection service to see if they will take it for recycling.

What is the procedure for draining the gas out of the tank to change the fuel pump

  • remove the negative battery terminal
  • open the gas lid and remove the tank cover.
  • under the car , under the gas tank is a drain valve , Its like a bolt)
  • connect a running hose and let water flow under the car, (optional)
  • get a large flat container
  • remove the drain valve from the tank and let the gas run out into the container. when its almost full cover back the valve, empty the container in a gas container an then continue to drain.

easier method but most people say its unsafe,

you need a hose and a gas container,

  1. pop the hood,
  2. locate the gas filter
  3. remove the hose leading to the gas filter, put it in your hose and place the other end in the gas container (ITS LIKE YOUR extending the hose to your gas container instead of the filter.
  4. turn on the ignition and watch the gas pump out the tank to your container, (pump must be working for this to work)

Water in gas, car wont start,, if i put in a water remover in my gas tank , will the car then start,,

it depends on how mush water is in the tank, best guess is no if there is enough water that the engine will not start than i douht that by just adding a water separator that it will start, sounds like you need to drain the fuel tank.

I accidently put water in my gas is there a gas releif valve

There is no drain. You can take a siphon(you can purchase these at any autoparts store) and drain the tank this way. It will make it a lot easier and safer.

I may have put water in the gas tank what should I do? i used two bottles of water evaporator already and it still wont start. Do I need to do major work now?

you will have to try and drain it out, if there is no drain plug, remove fuel tank, water evaporator will only deal with small amounts of moisture, you will also need a new fuel filter and drain the carb(unless it is injected) and the water can corrode the injectors after time

Stupidity on my part.

Yes you now need new spark plugs. After you change the plugs put about 1/2 a tank of low octane fuel and run that before putting anything else. After putting the fuel in the car keep trying to start the car. It will eventually start just try not to kill the battery too. :)
