Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight

The number 5 post on the distributor is rusted and probably hasn't fired in a long time. Can you change the cap for 2 and 5. It is a dead miss and we have changed the wire and the plug

Why not clean up the rust? You can't move plug wires around. Why not get a new cap? Your question is confusing.

M's cylinders are 1 first left, 2 first right, 3 second left, 4 second right, 5 thrid left, 6 third right... from front to back... Fords are 123 left 456 right... unless its an inline... So if they are all on one side of the disributor they are probably wrong... This is why I love Haynes manuals... They show positions of distributor caps and cylinders for firing order and timing... Pretty much almost everything you need... So the firing order on the distributor should match the way they number the cylinders...

#1 plug on the distributer


Put number one cylinder on compression top dead center, then look where the rotor on the distributor is put a chalk mark on the distributor housing, then install cap. Where mark and cap lign up to distributor cap terminal tower that is number one. Make sure you follow firing order and which direction distributor turns and put on the rest of wires. (example firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 is on a six cyl.)

Blown head gasket, replaced and now cant time. all books and web say that the vehical is not timeable it has to be done by a comp. tech 2. but we went to dealer and their tech 2 couldn't read it. i cant...


The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these procedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This "static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing indicating the number one position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be static timed.

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

What is the firing order for a grand cherokee laredo. I change the distributor for sgrand cherokee laredo jeep. I lined up tdc, had the rotor turned to number 1, but it is still missing.

I need a fire timing order for a chevy astro van v6


THE FIRING ORDER IS AS FOLLOWS : 1-6-5-4-3-2.
CYLINDER NUMBERS (front-to-rear) :
LEFT (driver side) 1-3-5
RIGHT (passenger side) 2-4-6

To set ignition timing, ensure that engine is at operating temperature, (190 degrees or above), bypass EST (electronic spark timing) by unplugging the single tan wire with a black stripe from the distributor. Ignition timing should be set at 0 degrees or TDC (top dead center). If not, loosen distributor hold down bolt and adjust, then retighten.

I have a miss fire


Recheck the firing order; 1-6-5-4-3-2

On the distributor passenger side radiator to fire wall. 2-4-6-coil
On the distributor drivers side radiator to fire wall. 3-1-5

Cylinder passenger side radiator to fire wall. 2-4-6
Cylinder drivers side radiator to fire wall. 1-3-5

Good luck and also check the distributor cap again for proper seating.
