This info should be in your owners manual. This job, while relatively simple, does require special tools and has some hidden hazards. You will have to have a socket (and handle) and extension to fit your spark plug size ... you will need a feeler gage to set them. You will need a filter wrench, a catch basin and a socket the proper size to pull the oil pan plug. BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT REINSTALLING THE PLUGS THAT THEY DONT GET CROSS THREADED. One cross threaded plug will wipe out all savings you had hoped to achieve by doint this work yourself.

If you cannot find your owners manual ... the folks at the auto parts store can provide you with the proper parts and tools to do this job as well as some tips for the first time back yard mechanic.

Please dispose of the used oil in the proper manner consistent with environmental needs.

Thanks

Spark plugs for the escort, autolite app5144 or xp5144, boch, 4469, and ac delco, 8,,,,,, The gaps are preset most of the time, but the correct gap is .044" Your oil should be about 10w40 weight, any brand will be ok, as long as you change it. Hope this helps.

1998 Ford Escort ZX2 lost power/shakes

The fuel filter should be replaced every 2 years. It is easy to do since it is on the firewall. You don't even have to get under the car. Low fuel pressure can cause the issues you described. A dirty air filter can do this as well as bad spark plug wires. These cars are picky about the type of spark plugs you use as well. None of the gimming (+2, +4, splitfire) plugs should be used. I've had best luck with Motorcraft and Autolite plugs.
