also the transmission fluid looks new and does not smell burnt.

  • jthomas44 Jul 05, 2010

I reset the ecm and I will try that out tomorrow. I will be going on a 75 mile trip. will let you know.

  • jthomas44 Jul 06, 2010

I reset the ecm yesterday. Today I drove the car about 110 miles and filled it up to the brim before I left and when I got back.

I put 7.6 gallons in it. Thats not very good considering my 99 got close to 23 for same distance. Do you have any other suggestions?

Hi! Car is not running right thats for sure. Please try this... Replace automatic transmission fluid for the fluid may be burnt causing stress to the transmission which can cause fuel inefficiency. Once the atf is replaced, a smooth drive and shifting will be noticeable which results to better fuel efficiency. Hope this helps and have a good one.

Thanks for the clarification. I suspect that the ECM (engine control module) is faulty. The ECM controls the air and fuel mixture, you will have to have it resetted just a first course of action. If no good on the reset then you'll have to replace it to have better mileage.

Ok, Have you ever tried replacing the torque converter lately? This controls the quick shifting of the car.

Do u have a check engine light on? if no then the system is operating normally, it is a really bad idea to compare the MPG of 2 like models of different years things change that u are not aware of like weight of the van and engine and emission system changes to meet new federal exhaust standards, so the fuel mileage will seldom if never be the same, if there was a fuel control problem the computer that runs the fuel injection system would turn on the check engine light and a fault code would be recorded in its memory, this is a very tightly controlled system and will sense any problem that would lower fuel mileage. I have looked at hundreds of complaint like this over the years and this is the same answer in any case where there are no system fault codes and no check engine light. I have 35 years of experience, I am a certified master technician in engine fuel control and electronics

I checked before i started asking and the vehicles are the same through 2004. The dealer said everything about the engine is the same and also the vehicle. There is no check engin light on. The factory mpg stated 16 and 22. It holds 21

  • jthomas44 Jul 04, 2010

The engine is the same and also the vehicle. It holds 21 gal of fuel and the last tank I got 251 miles. I cannot keep it unless I find the problem.

NO TWO CARS WILL GET THE SAME MILEAGE, I KNOW FOR CERTAIN UNLESS U HAVE A SLIPPING TRANS (AND THATR ALSO SETA CHECK ENGINE LIGHT U HAVE NO PROBLEM, BEEN THROUGH THIS A 100 TIMES, BUT SUIT YOURSELF, JUST BEEN DOING THIS 35 YEARS.

ARE U USING THE EXACT SAME TIRES INFLATED TO AT LEAST 32 PSI?

Torque specs 2003 olds silhouette rocker arm 3.400

Here is a suggested updated torque spec for this engine's rocker arm bolts;
Rocker arms
Step one: Torque to 11 ft lbs then tighten an additional 90 degrees of bolt head rotation. Some guys don't fuss with the torque specs and just get them good and tight. Either way, be careful, as the heads are aluminum. You do not want to over tighten these bolts

Poor mpg on 2003 f150 ford5.4 4x4 super crew

if you are getting about 14 on average no matter what you do it will not improve, Don't fall for any misleading claims because nothing you add will work. It takes fuel to make power the only improvement i have seen is by reprograming the computer but you must loose power in order to save fuel.

Please have a dealership that handles GM vehicles check to see if your vehicle was involved in what the trade considers a run away transmission condition involving the automatic transmissions parking pall linkage defecting thus allowing the transmission to go into drive while the vehicle is idling in park.
