SOURCE: Chevy Cobalt: key stuck in ignition

Had this problem with our 2006 Colbalt LS and it is the shifter. Key would not come out. Will have to replace the shifter. That's going to be a bill unless you have a powertrain warranty. Was over $600.-00 at the Chevy dealership we have to use.

SOURCE: How do i replace the ignition switch for a 1980

Most GM veicles of that vintage are similar. Disconnect one of the battery terminals. Remove the horn button from the center of the steering wheel. It may be the type that pulls off or it may be the type that comes off with 2 screws on the back of the steering wheel. Pull the dust cover (if any) then remove the large nut in the center of the steering wheel. Note the orientation of the wheel so that you can get it back in the same place. The next step will require a steering wheel puller. They are relatively inexpensive, but you can also borrow one from many auto parts retailers. Use the puller to remove the steering wheel, then you should have access to the ignition switch mounting screws(s). Pull the screws and the ignition lock cylinder should come out easily.

SOURCE: key stuck in 2009 chevy hhr ignition help please

You may want to try pushing fordward harder into the park position while turning the key to the off position. The locking cable may need adjustment. If this does not work, try turning the collar just behind the keyswitch counter clockwise while trying to remove the key. Thanks, Dana

How do you by-pass ignition switch on 1980 Chevy Silverado

You can't, without a bypass kit and the orginal key or resister value to use in the bypass kit. The theft system on the truck is a VATS system that uses a resister in the key that must match the resister value in the computer to start the car. No resister match, no start. The kit eliminates the resister key by hard wiring the resister permanently in the vehicle. You still will need the key to mechanically unlock the steering column and turn the ignition cylinder.
