Question about 2002 Chevrolet Express

2002 chevy express 2500 5.7V8\r\nTemp gauge sticking at max after overheating. Replaced temp sensor & thermostat. Replaced inst. cluster. New cluster sticks open @ max just like the old one. Is there another item to be replaced which affects temp gauge?

Nope. That did not reset the gauge. Unless there is a sequence required (IE changing the cluster, resetting the computer before turning on the ignition.)?

Yes, it was the temp switch on the head above #1 and #3 spark plugs. Still had fun zeroing in the gauge. I removed the cluster cover (separate it by pressing tabs and prying apart). Then installed cluster without bezel. Then ran engine to temp (195 degrees), pulled needle (carefully by placing finger nails on each side and pulling), and pushed needle back on at 195 degrees on the gauge. Then reinstalled bezel. The new switch/sensor measured 60 ohms (Borg Warner). They are all made in Mexico.
The important thing was realizing that the temp gauge is related to the switch on side of head. The temp sensor at the thermostat is related to the ECM.

There are 2 temp sensors one is the coolant temp sensor for ecm data and the other is engine coolant temp sender/switch for the guage.

Usually this is located on the left cylinder head towards the front of the head. The plug on it looks very similiar to that of an O2 sensor.

Glad that took care of it for you.GM tends to do this on alot of thier vans and trucks.I am thinking when it overheated it caused the sensor to just stick.Had that happen a few times.Interesting thing on yours though is information isn't really readily available about this particular sensor. Thanks for the great rating and for using FixYa,

Hi! Please try to disconnect the positive connector on the battery terminal and let it sit for atleast 10mins. Reconnect the battery connector and observe if the temp gauge will be back at normal. Hope this helps and have a good one!

One thing can resolve this is by resetting the PCM (powertrain control module), this has connectivity on electrical power supply.

It mite not be running hot at all , I replaced a few stepper motors for the temp. gauge inside the instrument cluster . GM products of your year ,have known instrument cluster gauge problems . Best thing is to hook up to a factory scan tool or another type of professional grade scan tool to see what the engine computer is seeing from coolant temp.sensor Do your cooling fans come on ? They should at about 221 degrees . Or you came go to harbor freight an by a temp. inferred gun. point it at the upper radiator hose near the thermostat , an see what the actual temp. is . My 2001 chevrolet venture minivan is over heating. Its got a fairly new water pump replaced in jan of this year, and i replaced a busted heater core hose. Then filled radiator back up with water and...

Is the vehicle really over heating would be the first thing to address . If this vehicle was brought to the chevy dealership I work at , hooking up the factory scan tool to see what the PCM - engine computer is seeing for coolant temp . Too see if the cooling fans work , too see what temp info . the PCM is sending to the instrument cluster . I know GM had stepper motor problems in the instrument cluster . The step motor is what makes the temp , fuel , speedo , tach , gauges needles move . Just replaced a cluster in a 2005 chevy cavalier , temp. gauge goes full hot after just starting the vehicle . The cooling fans should kick on at around 223 degress , do the cooling fans come on ? Given the amount of electronics on these vehicles , it maybe best to take it to a qualified repair shop . That knows how to test these systems . Without testing I would only be guessing as to what could be wrong , Unless your prepaired to replace a bunch of parts , because your going to get a lot of different cause's from on here . Testing is the proper way to finding the problem . If you don't have a scan tool to view engine sensor data parameters , temp sensor. At harbor freight they sell a Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer With Laser Targeting. This will show what the temp is .

The temperature gauge on my 2002 grand prix dose

the temperature sending unit on a 97 grand prix 3800 gt(which is also the coolant temperature sensor) is not accurate. the sending unit part of this sensor only sends info to the guage on the dash. the coolant sensor part sends info to the computer of the car. it is located under thermostat and somewhat difficult to get at. i had put a brand new one in and my temperature on my dash is all over the place---even with good thermostat and properly bled system. when i hook up a scanner to my computer, the coolant sensor is sending the computer(ecu??) what seems to be the right temp. anywhere from 194 degrees to 217 when hot. the guage however on dash go from 160 to 260 in less than 2 minutes.

Overheating Express

is it acually getting hot or is it just the gauge on the dash saying so? a quality scan tool can show you what the coolant temp sensor is telling the pcm it may differ from the gauge.
