how could it be the fuel filter?

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

and what else should i do besides the fuel filter?

Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

Try removing the radiator cap, while it is cool, leave the cap off,and start the engine, and see if coolant comes out of the radiator ,up like a fountain,if so,then there is a head gasket blown, and filling up the cylinders, look at the tail pipe also, this might tell if the coolant is coming out the tail pipe

If the fuel filter is stopping up,then this could cause the engine to die,and on a diesel ,you need to change the fuel filter kinda often.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

so if this is the problem what kinda fix should i need to be expecting?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

This would be a job that is time consuming, and you might as well do both heads.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

so it would be expensive to fix?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

Oh yes,you have the parts(gaskets),and the labor, and having the heads checked, and milled most likely.maybe 800 dollars, and not counting fixing the problem if it was not just the head gasket that caused the problem to begin with, but check it out first to make sure this is the problem.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

so if the radiator is shooting out coolant then its a cracked or broken head? Sorry for all the questions im just wanting to make sure i understand what needs to be done so ill know what else needs to be dont aswell

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

Yes,but it has to be cold,to do this test, and the radiator full,if it shoots up in the air,it is a head gasket, and still might be even if it does not shoot out,but I expect it ill,a pressure test can tell more,if the pressure tester is attached to the radiator, and pumped up to 18 psi, then the coolant leak will let itself known,it will fill up the cylinders, and the spark plugs would have to be removed to tell if a pressure tester is used.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

its a diesel so it doesnt use spark plugs.

I am sorry working on too many here, glow plugs

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

I suspect the coolant will come out of the radiator pretty good,so try this test you can do your self, just make sure the engine is cold.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

yeah i plan on doing it first thing in the morning, it hasnt been ran since about 9Am eastern time but its already dark

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

ok,fill me in on it tomorrow.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

So i removed the radiator cap, and started my truck and it didnt shoot out. so what should i do now?

  • Ronny Bennett Sr.
Ronny Bennett Sr. Jul 03, 2010

remove the glow plugs and check to see if there is coolant in the cylinders,it would be best to use a pressure tester to do this,if there is a head gasket,or head problem, causing the problem, the tester will make the cylinder fill up,with coolant.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

I ran the truck today and it has ran fine all day. and i checked my coolant level and its not losing any

White smoke is caused by coolant or water coming out the tail pipe.  There is a chance that the white smoke was caused by water splashing up from a puddle onto the exhaust pipe.  Keep an eye on the coolant level in the radiator in any event.
White smoke when first started is normal. If white smoke continues you have an internal coolant leak, i.e., cracked head/blown head gasket. Black smoke is caused by a rich fuel condition. Blue smoke is caused by oil consumption. The smell of coolant inside your car is caused by a leaking heater core.

But in your ford there is white smoke so the coolant leak and level has to be checked.

A THICK WHITE smoke from the tailpipe can mean only one thing (auto trans) - your engine consumes your transmission fluid. This problem normally is an easy fix.
The antifreeze to cause very thick white smoke. But in case of antifreeze in the engine it is easy to check. Unscrew your engine's oil depositor lid. Turn it bottom side up and look for thick deposits.
Check your coolant and transmission fluid levels. This might tell you what your car is consuming.

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Get the coolant pressure checked at local auto store. This will lead you too the confirmation.
But if you notice the white smoke only while the starting the car.And only for few minutes. Then its due to cold-breeze got collected in the fuel tank and getting released from the exhaust tail pipe.So you can ignore the smoke.
Thanks for keeping updated with the query.

  • zdubb12 Jul 03, 2010

what would be causing the white smoke to come out of the tail pipe? How would the coolant be leaking into my fuel?

It is easy to check if you have an air compressor. Remove one of the rear sparkplugs and the radiator cap. Fill the radiator and then push some air into the sparkplug hole (get a good seal in case a valve is open). Repeat with all the cylinders and watch for air bubbles coming up into the radiator. If bubbles come up or fluid is pumped out, the head gasket is blown and must be replaced.

white smoke out the tailpipe usually means there is coolant
    leaking inside the
combustion chamber inside the engine or
there is automatic transmission fluid leaking inside the combustion chamber.

The first thing I would look for would be is your radiator low
on coolant? If so, I would get a cooling system pressure test to determine if
there is an internal coolant leak in your engine. Blown
head gaskets are the first thing
that comes to mind here and this pressure test should reveal this to you.

If you do find you have a blown head gasket or some other internal coolant leak I would recommend you try this over the counter product first before you spend any big bucks overhauling the engine.
If the pressure test determines the coolant is not leaking, then you might want to see if your transmission is equipped with a vacuum transmission modulator valve on the side of the transmission.
This valve will have a rubber vacuum line attached to it, if you remove the vacuum line from the valve and transmission fluid comes out you need to replace the transmission modulator valve.

Checkout. Thanks for keeping updated with your query.

My girlfriend filled my tank with diesel and now the car will not start or run. Obviously. What would be the easiest way to fix this problem? I have a 2007 ford five hundred.

Remove as much diesel fuel as possible from the gas tank and refill it with gasoline. You may have to crank the car to purge the diesel fuel out of the fuel lines. After that, it should start and run okay. There should be no damage to the engine from the diesel fuel.

Fill it up with the highest octane fuel, use gas treatment and fuel injection system cleaner, and drive the diesel out of the system. The car will not like it, the engine may knock and stutter and generally not want to cooperate. After a few tanks of good gas and gas treatment and engine cleaner you may consider replacing the fuel filter. If this solution worked, it would be the cheapest.

You ran the truck out of oil? If so then you have seized the engine up and it wont start again. If your lucky the engine could be rebuilt using the same block but the internals will all need to be replaced.

What about the fuel filter in the frame? Did the Ford mechanic check it?
Is a diesel? If that is the case, it could be the electric cellanoid switch in the injector pump. But usually it would start and stop it would just shut down with that.

Thank you for using Fix Ya Your rating is always appreciated.
