My 2000 linclon ls 6 cly cranks but sounds terriable just started doing it

I hope it's not the timing chain tensioner,Chris. I know the 2000 V8 engines had bad tensioners.
Could it be a loose starter or the starter drive is hanging up in the flywheel teeth?
Could it be a really bad DRIVE BELT TENSIONER or the idler pulley gone bad?
It's just difficult to say,but I hope it's not the TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS. Lot of miles on it? don-ohio (:^)

Read some more. There are some sensors which do not make contact with water. Be sure that examples are not of 4.6L engine or a California equipped engine.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove resonator from throttle body. Remove air filter housing.
Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt.
Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle.
Support engine assembly from above with Support Fixture (J-28467-B). Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine.Remove power steering hose clamp bolt, and position hose away from timing belt cover. Remove front timing belt cover. Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine).
Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 4 . Align camshaft sprocket timing marks with notches on valve cover. See Fig. 5 .
CAUTION: Engine damage could result if camshaft sprockets are not properly aligned with notches on valve cover.
Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. Use an Allen wrench to rotate tensioner and relieve tension on timing belt. Remove timing belt.
Fig. 4: Aligning Crankshaft Sprocket Timing Mark
Fig. 5: Aligning Camshaft Sprocket Timing Marks
Ensure crankshaft and camshaft timing marks are still aligned. Install the timing belt. See Fig. 7 . Turn the timing belt tensioner counterclockwise to tension the timing belt. Turn tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch on the rear timing belt cover. Tighten automatic tensioner bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Ensure timing belt tensioner pointer is still aligned with notch.
If timing belt tensioner is correctly aligned, install timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Install the engine mount bracket on the timing belt end of engine. Position power steering hose in place, and install clamp bolt. Install crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine accessory drive belt.
Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. Install air filter housing and resonator. Connect air intake temperature sensor connector. Connect negative battery cable.

Timing marks on 1999 rx 300

usually the timing marks are on the front pulley.another way to replace the cam belt,is to mark the belt and each pulley with correction ink[white] and then just transfer the marks over to the new belt and then align each pulley to the marks.thats easier if the old belt hasnt moved or jumped a tooth.most *** motors have the timing marks for cambelt replacement easy to spot with corresponding raised bits of ali pedestals next to them

How to change the timing belts on a 2000 Stratus

You can get a auto repair manual from the library for instructions.
Here are some guides.
On a cold engine.
1) Disconnect the battery.
2) Rotate the engine until cylinder 1 is at TDC (Top dead center)
with the spark plug removed, back out the engine slightly and tightly pack in a small rope to fill above the piston head. Leave one end of the rope hanging out the sparkplug hole! This will prevent the crankshaft from turning when you remove the pulley on it.
3) Remove the drive belts for alternators, power steering etc.
4) Remove the cover over the timing belt. If the engine is transverse mounted you may have to disconnect the upper motor mount and slightly jack up the motor.
5) Observe the position of each pulley. The camshaft pulley should have an alignment mark on it to match the case mark. They must not be turned relative to each other. It will throw off the timing.
6) Remove old timing belt. I believe you may have to remove the drive pulley on the crankshaft.
7) Install the new belt. Make sure everything is in alignment.

Do the above steps in reverses to reassemble the engine. You may want to install new drive belts also.
