ran the a/c and drove the the van slow until the temp guage was almost (3/4) to the hot level. Fans never did com on. One of the wires to the temp sensor (at the thermostat) had the insulation melted off. Could the temp sensor be part of the problem?

yes, unplug the temp sensor the fans should run by default

I tried this and still no fan. In the morning I will hit the auto part store and replace the conector and the sensor. Thanks for your help. I will let you know it this worked.

is there voltage to the fan? u never said, does it actually overheat? have u bypassed the sensor? use a jumper wire, and u never told me if the fan runs if the AC is on?

also is there two wires at the relay that have 12 volts? one is the relay closing coil the other is the power for the fan, the fan power wire is a thicker wire.

  • jtjensick Jul 03, 2010

the fans do not run when the a/c is on. I will check voltage a little later. I will also check to see if the fans come on if I supply voltage directly to the fans. Thanks

CHECKING THE FANS FOR VOLTAGE WOULD HAVE BEEN MY 1ST TEST.

  • jtjensick Jul 04, 2010

I have no voltage to the fan relay. Where should I check for voltage next? Hope you have (had) a great 4th.

  • jtjensick Jul 04, 2010

I guess I had a big bowl of sugar frosted stupid this morning. When Ii put the fuse in the proper slot I got voltage to the relay. However I still do not get voltage to the fan motors. Is it possible the new relay is not the right one? I have been given the wrong parts before.

CHECK UNDER THE HOOD IN THE REPLAY AND MAXI FUSE CENTER.

IF U JUMPER THE REALY SOCKET DO THE FANS RUN? DID THIS RELAY COME FROM THE DEALER? ARE U SURE U REPLACED THE CORRECT RELAY UNDER THE HOOD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE?

  • jtjensick Jul 05, 2010

I bought the relay at AutoZone. I checked online and found there are two brands recomended and I got a different one. I will go to the dealer tomorrow. The relay on this vehicle is located on the body along side the radiator.

  • jtjensick Jul 05, 2010

Turns out the relay I got was not the correct one. I replaced it with another brand and BINGO it works. Thank for all your help!!

My Caravan radiator fans run constantly and the temp gage never moves off "cold". The engine is not overheating. I have replaced the temp sensor and the thermostat. No change.

The temperature sensor may be controlling the fan via a relay; these can fail by welding the contacts together remaining permanently 'on.'
Locate the fuse (and possibly relay) box, check inside the cover for a layout that identifies which fuse or relay controls the fan; they are often on their own fuse and definitely on their own relay.

I have 1996 Dodge caravan and the fan's come on and stay on

By chance are you saying the fans stay running when you turn off the engine, the problem is with the radiater fan relay, the points are probably sticking together, it's in the pdc box under the hood, power comes from fuse 4, 40 amp, through the relay, then to the fans, relay is controlled by the engine controller (pcm). just flip the cover and find the right relay, pull it out when they wont shut off, if it quits, swap it anouther relay from the pdc box, and test it again, fans come on at 212*F and shut off at 199-202*F. if the fans stay running while engine is running, you might have a coolant sensor issue, or cooling system issue. If you need more assistance, let me know. GOOD LUCK, RDJRP

Check the temperature sensor on the engine as this is the primary sensor that initiates the fans coming on through the vehicle computer. Also check the relays, there are relays for the fans too.Good luck.
