There is a idler pulley that keeps tension on the alternator belt.... it is spring loaded, use a breaker bar and a socket (to place on the molded nut (looks like a nut, but when you move it the tension is released on the belt) to take the pressure off of the belt for removal from the alternator.... it's location is next to the alternator.

The alternator does not move, just the idler pulley

I need to fit a fan belt on a peugeot 306 estate

just in front of the altenator, there is a 10mm bolt, tighten that and it will tighten the fan belt .
these belts are quite tight, make sure the one you have is the correct length, sometimes the suppliers will send one that is close to the correct size, and is sometimes a few milimeters smaller.

You dont normally have to loosen anything else, but the easiest way is to put the belt on the alternator, tensioner and power steering first, then ease the belt over the ridge of the crankshaft last, one rib at a time, but evenly all the way around the pulley.

Which bolts on the altenator and power steering pump need to be loosened to release the belts on a 2003 Mazda Protege?

I don`t know that there is a bolt to loosen the belt tension. There should be a automatic tensioner that you pull back and hold to remove the belt.

Changing the altenator

Have you taken the belt off yet.
The belt is tensioned with a pulley which is spring loaded. Look for a small pulley wheel about 2 inches in diameter. Put a spanner on the nut and move it to loosen the belt. The alternator is a fixed one which has no adjusting arm. Just bolts to secure it.
Good Luck
