Does the gear shifter move? if the gear shifter moves and it wont shift then you have broken linkage, if it wont move you may have ignition linkage problems or the button may not be pushing in all the way, also the brake pedal is tied in too

Remove the outer plastic chrome ring around the shifter. Inside you will see a pink plastic device on the drivers side of the linkage push this in and shift car into desired gear. You may have to do this for a few days and will have to do it everytime you shift out of park. It should reset it self back to normal in about 3 days. Worked for me. Good luck

This is not a permanent fix, but you'll be able to shift and drive...this is a "safety feature" when you're break lights aren't working...it may be a fuse issue, i found that didn't help either.

How to drive it while it's "broken" On the top left of your gear shift is circle that looks like a button that is only 3/4 there...see picture (it's circled in red)

pry that off with a key or something... now restart your car, push on the break and at the same time insert a key or something into the now open hole...while pushing down use the other key to shift into reverse. You will need to do the same thing to shift back into park.

Good heavens that is the most inneficient safety feature I've ever heard of. How about instead of leaving the car immoble and keeping you in a scetchy neihborhood to get mugged they just "invent" a warning light notification. grr

check to see if the brake lights come on it may be a problem with a brake switch under the dash not letting the shift lock release. there may be a seperate switch just for it so check and see it there is two switches touching the brake pedal lever if the brake lights come on.

SOURCE: in my 2003 ford escort zx2, its stuck in park and

my car got stuck in park several times, i'm the brake lights would come on but i couldnt push the button to make my car move out of park...there's a tab on the right side at the top of the gear shifter console pop it out, stick a skrew driver down in and that should release it if that's your problem...it's a little bit of a rig, but it works, havent been stuck in park since

Gear shift stuck in park
Most vehicles have a small rectangular hole near the base of shifter for override. Sometime you need to flip up the little cover on it. Insert key into that hole and press shifter button and change gear. If the vehicle is not starting, try starting in neutral. Also, turn steering wheel and make sure brake is pressed while trying to start or change gears.

DISCONNECT BRAKE PEDAL 1991 SUBURBAN
98 Suburban 5.7L, automatic trans is stuck in park - no previous shifting problems, I know that the brake switch also operates the brake/transmission solenoid (BTS). Stepping on the brake pedal prior to starting the vehicle allows shifting from park to another gear. When I switch the key to the "on" position, I don't hear the BTS click. I can start the vehicle and the brake lights work fine. I just can't shift out of Park. I am unemployed and I am trying to troubleshoot this problem and fix it myself. Please help!
