I took my fuel pump off my 06 Ford F350 diesel because it would not start. The fuel pump hums but will not pump diesel out of a bucket. Is this normal, or is it bad?

Is this a diesel or gas vehicle ? and what engine does it have ? They all have different type of systems . Diesels have a low pressure and high pressure pump and IPC and IPR valves . Gas vehicles have different controls ,( FPDM ) fuel pump driver module that is controlled by the engine computer ,with the help of a fuel rail pressure sensor. There is problem with the FPDM because of it's location under the vehicle . The Diesel engine doesn't have an ignition system. Also the dash light shouldn't cause it not to start? You said you changed the fuel filter right? After you started cranking it again did the lift pump fill the new filter up. I have had these before where the lift pumps go bad causing low lift pump pressure which causes the water in fuel light to be on. Did it die going down the road or did you shut it off and can't get it restarted.
CHECK ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP FUSE THAT SUPPLYS THE INJECTION PUMP FUEL.IF ALL IS GOOD.REPLACE FUEL FILTER AND AIR FILTER.MAKE SURE GLOW PLUGS AND GLOW PLUGS CONTROLLER IS WORKING. IF NOT. THAT WILL CAUSE NO STARTING PROBLEMS BIG TIME.
I have a feeling you got a wholed of unleaded fuel or bad fuel
I drive a diesel box truck the station I always took it to the fuelman put unleaded in the diesal tanks and the truck just died it had to have the gas tank completed drained and cleaned out but also ask yourself how many miles are on it and when was last tune up and if you live in a cold climate I recommend a heater block plug
i had to replace my oil pressure regulator sensor it contols the oil pressure required to have the injectors open and spit fuel, if you replaced it and still no start replace the the cam position sensor
