THERE ARE 2 KINDS OF DTC.
ONE IS STORED IN MEMORY ,HISTORY
THE OTHER, IS LIVE AN FAILING NOW, IN REAL TIME.
seems your car battery is bad,. or its lugs loose or rusty?
p1682 (means starter failed to start the engine)
YOU DO KNOW ,RIGHT. BATTERIES CAN BE
GOOD
BAD (DEAD)
WEAK
OR INTERMITTENT.
9 YEAR OLD BATTERIES ARE MOSTLY NO GOOD.
THAT OLD.
MY LIFE TIME RECORD 1964 TO NOW IS 10 YEAR.
ONLY ON 1 BATTERY EVER.
There are 6 causes of no crank,
or 7 if IMMO lamp glows wrong killing starter dead on purpose.
6 tests to find it using $15 volt meter, easy.
free tests are stated above, lugs loose
check all fuses. oops. 20 cent fuse blown.
crank in park and then try neutral
hot wire starter motor , keys in pocket , safely
it will not start like that but the test shows 2 things are good
battery and starer both.
and then meter tests to find it ask.
What is model year? Sometimes when you replace engine you may need the computer from donor vehicle as well? Any testing at starter motor make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.
Make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good? You can turn crank by hand, correct? The engine isn't seized? The starter motor usually has two voltage circuits, one comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the crank position and may be wired through the neutral switch for automatic tranny. The starter motor usually grounds through engine block. So, grounds are important.
You can take starter motor off, lay it on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from charged battery to starter motor, at the least, it should kick out drive gear and spin.
you mean it wont crank, it must crank to start. 1: bad starter system 2: weak battery even a new battery can be weak. if you dont charge it first. or if it starts ok then wont later, that means cars charge system failure.
can you jump start engine? with jumper cables. that be a big clue there, proving starter works but battery was weak. if the battery is fully charged. you can hot wire the starter solenoid, (tiny terminal) if car cranks now, the key start wire is failing. A/T or M/T tranny? both use different path here....??????
if you cant hot wire it, then that means the stater is bad the cables bad or the battery is not really connected. or possible the engine is seized, can you hand turn over the engine at the front crank bolt (CW , facing rear, in neutral) if not motor is seized. some times even the starter and rig gear can be seized. the starter can be bench tested. too. http://www.fixkick.com/nocrank.html
Well it could be an engine problem, or a bad connection with one of the battery cables. The engine would require more voltage to crank when it is hot, but not that much. You might want to have someone check the engine to see how much drag is has when hot, by turning the crank by hand.
Starter has a direct, high amperage connection to the battery. Thus either the starter is old and weak, needing replacement; or the battery has not the cold cranking amperage it used to have, needing replacement; or there is something putting a big drag on the crankshaft such as a cylinder head full of coolant so the battery and starter, even if new could not spin the crank. Water does not compress. Something else could have failed inside the engine preventing the crank from turning as well. I suggest a mechanic take a look at it.
Check all the battery and starter cables, particularly the earth cables off the battery. Also check the battery clamps.Check the earthing between the engine and chassis.if this is bad you can get this type of problem.
Hello and welcome to FixYa!
You may have a weak battery. It may turn the lights and radio on but power to the starter is not enough to turn the flywheel. Please have the battery charged or replace if necessary.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
The knock sensor will not cause a no-start. The knock sensor only retards the timing when the engine is running. If the starter is not working we need to check the battery voltage, battery cables, starter, engine ground, neutralsafety switch, ignition switch, security system. These are the only things that can cause a no crank.
If you really have the urge to clear your computer disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 minutes.
