Inside the dist. is a part that is held in with two screws. You can remove it after you remove the rotor. Most people call it the ignition module. You can have it tested at auto zone but I have seen the test be wrong. Hope this helps leave comment

Sounds like the immobilisor to me ,but it as i have never worked on this type of vehicle iam blind so to speak ,but have you changed the ignition module which iam sure a vehicle of this age will have ,either in the distributor or under the coil ,and if that doesnt work then change the pick up crank sensor wherever it is on this vehicle

Check your fuses, Pull coil wire and lay the end 1/2 inch from a good grounded area of the motor. Turn the key and check for an arc from the coil wire to ground. It no spark, might be a coil problem.

1985 Chevy El Camino 305ci. Turned over good but wouldn't fire. Replaced contrrol module and it started fine for about 2 months, then did the same thing. Replaced dist cap, rotor & coil. Start

Had an 84 silverado 305 that did the same thing. Try giving it a full tune up. Plugs, wires... Mine turned out to be fouled plugs. I didn't find that out till after i tore it down & put a timing set in it. Wasn't getting good enough spark.

I changed my dist. cap on 1990 chevy p/u took one

Is the coil connected to the ditributor? did you knock any connections off in the process? Does it turn over but not fire? do you have spark at the plugs? Are you sure of cylinder location in respect to firing order? Did you-and check this first as with any elec. problems-blow a fuse in the ignition circuit? good luck!
