The starter motor will be at the union between the engine and transmission. Follow the positive battery cable to it's terminal end (not the battery, obviously), and you'll be at the starter solenoid.

do i have to remove the whole starter moter to get to the solenoid???

  • Anonymous Jun 27, 2010

Yep, you will have to. The solenoid is bolted to the starter motor, and you'll have a hard time accessing the (small) bolts without removing the entire assembly.

Is the starter motor had to remove?

Is the starter hard to remove?

  • Anonymous Jun 27, 2010

That's sort of relative. Hard for you, possibly. Hard for me, or another experienced mechanic, not so much.

I can tell you that it's probably only held on by about 2 or 3 bolts, and there will be at least one large wire, and one or more smaller wires leading from it. Make sure you tag where each wire goes, as their proper installation is critical. You will want to disconnect the positive terminal on the battery before starting work.

Purchase yourself a Haynes or Chilton's manual for your vehicle from the parts store. They're about $20, and should be considered priceless if you intend to tinker on your vehicle.

Whicked!!! Which i could buy you a beer!!!! Thanks ever so much!!

LOL. Paid solutions buy my beer! You're welcome for the advice, and remember to come back if you have more troubles.

Chances are, the solenoid's internals are bad, or the motor itself needs to be fixed.

Remove it and take it to your local parts store, they'll test it for you and tell you what needs to be done. Auto Zone or Advance do it free.

The loud click is the solenoid moving the gear forward on the starter to engage the flywheel ring gear. The problem is that the solenoid isn't then transferring the current to the starter motor to turn it over, or the motor isn't able to turn for a number of reasons.
