Single click means starter engaging but not turning (enough voltage in system)
rapid repeated clicks means not enough voltage to engage starter (battery dead and/or bad alternator)
if you charge battery, get truck running and disconnect battery, and truck dies. bad alternator/wiring to alternator.
Hi Susie, Turn on the head lights and get someone to observe them while trying to start. If they dim during trying to start, replace the battery. Regards John
SOUND LIKE ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING BATTERY.CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE SHOULD BE 12.6 VOLTS.MAY SURE BATTERY CABLES CLEAN AND TIGHT.WITH ENGINE RUNNING CHECK ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT BATTERY.SHOULD BE 13.5 - 14.5 VOLTS WITH ENGINE RUNNING.IF ALTERNATOR FUSE GOOD AND ALTERNATOR BATTERY FEED WIRE AND VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES OKAY NOT DAMAGED.DRIVE BELT NOT SLIPPING OR BELT TENSIONER NOT DAMAGED.ALTERNATOR MORE LIKELY FAULTY.TURN OFF RADIO FIRST.BEFORE REMOVING NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE TO KEEP FROM LOSING RADIO CODE.
Hi,all the alternators job is,is to charge the battery,so the alternator has nothing to do with it not starting.now if your battery keeps draining down and you have to recharge it every couple of days, then it would be the alternator that was bad.but if you have a fully charged battery and it still wont start, its another problem! does it turn over and try to start but not start?? or when you turn the key over does it just go click-click-click?? or does it just not make any noise at all when you turn the key over?? it makes a big diffrence which of the three its doing, let me know which one its doing, also you can take your battery to auto-zone and they will load test to see if its holding a charge ok.....just let me know.......yz-maniac.
a single click usually means the starter. multiple rapid clicks while the key is in start position usually means battery...if battery bad, could be due to alternator, but you likely would have noticed a battery light on the dash while driving before.
double check connection to battery if good connection could be a bad cell in battery or bad alternator you can check when jumped take negative side off if still runs alternator good if dies alternator is bad this may help!!
not the alternator if you get one click most likely low voltage to the start pin. if you get a click click click with one turn of the switch its the battery or bad connection
Clicking??? Probably starter/alternator. does the starter turn? The clicking, is that all you get when you turn the key? Have the battery checked and make sure its holding a charge. If battery holds a charge, its time to have your alternator tested, if the alternator checks, then the clicking may be the starter/soleniod. Places like autozone will check the battery/alt for free, provided you can still drive to get there.
