Hi, l have a 1991 MR2 MK2'' turbo with Ferrari 355 body kit. The car has been standing outside in the wet all winter, only being started up a few times. Now l have started the car and as usual she starts on the button every time. She runs fine, however the dash is showing three warning lights, 1) battery, 2)engine cooling fan 3)exhaust temperature. Non of which go out when the engine starts. l have determined that the battery is not being charged and when running l have removed the earth lead from the car and it dies. However l have seen another owner asking this very question on another forum, he too had his car standing all winter but the experts advice was only to check that the alternator was charging...................how would this affect other systems in the car like the cooling fan etc, it just doesnt make sense? lm sure these problems are all caused by one fault due to the car getting damp........could it be an earth ?............please help :^( Jim

Those are the error lights that show on the MR2 when either the alternator is giving no charge, or when it is overcharging. An alternator can fail in both ways, and it sounds exactly like what you describe - improper charging.

How do u know the alternator is charging correctly, u should read 14 volts at the battery when the cars running to know its charging. try wd40 on ur electrical connectors in the engine bay, this will drive any moisture out of the connectors and hopefully correct ur problem.

Answer:

On the second generation MR2 and MR2 Turbo (1991 through 1995 USA, and 1991 through 1999 for the rest of the world), it is on the FRONT side of the engine, between the engine and the rear firewall of the cabin area. It is the right side of the car.

Clutch

Hi
I own a 1992 2.0 sw20 tbar it pretty common for mk2's to eat clutches Id get your local garage to collect the car and check it out for you as it could be just a worn clutch plate or the springs have gone weak/broken on the fly wheel part of the clutch, worst case senario is that its the gearbox or the differential thats gone (not good lots of dosh) you simply wont know until its been checked out.

P.S there is no adjustment that you can make to the clutch really once its worn thats it im affraid till its replaced.

Hi I have just now noticed the MR2.Former Jeep owner but now have fallen for the MR2's 1991-1993 models.Cant drive a stick anymore so what concerns do the automatic transmissions have ? Any differences...

Hello, and welcome to FixYa. Please allow me to assist you.

The MR2 auto transaxles are very reliable units. Just change the ATF with the correct fluid every 30,000 miles. If it has high mileage, 90 + K miles, and is a dirty colour, I'd recommend a transmission flush. This will remove all of the dirty fluid from the system.

The MR2 non-turbo was a fun car, and had very few comon failures.

Try to stay away from the turbo cars, the turbos are know to fail, and the parts and labour to replace the turbo is very expensive.

The MR2s are rather quirky when it comes to servicing the cooling system, you have to bleed the air out. The necessary procedure is in the owner's manual, or online.

Other than those items, the MR2 is a very decent and reliable car. A little noisy, with the engine right behind you, but, that is part of the fun.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

Mr2 1991

.044 plug gap.
Use NGK iridium plugs as you do not have to gap them and they last 100K miles.
Most regular NGK come pre-gapped, It never hurts to check though

Hi ive got a 1991 mr2 turbo it seems i cant select my gears properly if i do get a gear it creeps forward with the engine off i get the gears ok and the clucth feels very soft any ideas please

You need a slave cylinder and possibly a clutch kit.
Contact www.twosrus.com for parts. If this car has over 80K I would replace both and get the flywheel resurfaced and save the headaches that can creep up later on.
