Engine Sputters Hello. I just bought a 1980 FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser. It runs fine most of the time. However, once in a while the engine will sputter and act like it is going to stall. If I turn it off and let it sit for an hour, it turns on and runs fine. On a longer trip, I have had these problems. I stopped and turned it off and removed the carburetor filter and tapped on the carburetor with a wrench and it starts and runs fine. Do you have any idea what type of problem this could be? Thanks.

This sounds more like an ignition problem if you have the service manual that came with the truck it has diagnostics to check your coil, igniter, distributor, wires etc.. also you may want to look at your coil wire going to the distributor and if there is an in-line resistor replace the wire as the resistor is probably bad and when it heats up it interupts voltage to the distributor, wires, plugs etc.. when it cools down it will work for a while-- probably more often when the ambient air temperature is hot or above 90 degrees farenheit.

Do you still have the stock straight 6 engine? Could be a stuck float in the carb. I've also seen where the fuel lines get clogged enough to cause the problems you're having. So even after rodding out the fuel tank, it ended up being the fuel lines, where the PSI going from the fuel pump to the carb wasn't up to par consistantly. If you have a V8 conversion like I personally have, could be vapor lock also. I ended up wrapping the fuel lines in some orange material that NASA uses for heat deflection, found at high performace/racing automotive stores.

Hello, I bought a 1980 land cruiser, but it does not have the picture on how to activate the 4x4 stick, can you help me pls

First thing to do is engage your front hubs. Gold colored locking mechanism in the center of the hub with arrows reading "free" and "engage" rotate the mechanism towards the engage until it stops. do this on both front hubs. Then start and let engine idle, depress the clutch and shift the short (right) shift lever to the "High" position, then shift transmission lever into 1st gear and then you will be in 4 wheel drive.

Check engine light on, not running 100% power now

take it to a auto parts store like AutoZone or PepBoys. They usually scan for free.

1991 Toyota land cruiser.. vibration, sputtering??

One of the plug wires may be arching or have a defective spark. It's odd, but I check mine by removing each plug wire one at a time. I'll use stick the end of a screw driver (insulated handle) in the plug wire and check the spark coming in from the coil/coil pack/distributor. Keep in mind, the engine is running and I only do this if there's no shop open or close by. Also the insulated handles are for that unwanted shock. Has he checked for sparks at night with the engine running. Look around and follow the plug wires and around coil/coil pack for any jumping sparks. If any are seen, there's your problem.
